Worth the Stream?

Nobody Wants This (2024)

Platform: Netflix

Basic plot: A podcaster with unhealthy relationship habits meets a super-charming hot rabbi and they proceed to navigate their mutual attraction amid pressures and opinions from pretty much everyone in their lives.

How it was probably pitched to the producers:

What if we leveraged everyone’s 2000s Seth Cohen crush by giving Adam Brody a beard and self-confidence?

Thoughts:

Look, I was always guaranteed to love this, it’s got Kristen Bell and Adam Brody being cute and banter-y. Their chemistry is off the charts.

That being said, the show has a lot going for it aside from the leads. The script is witty, the supporting characters are generally appealing but also strong personalities, and the soundtrack is decent. Bonus, it’s also somewhat based on the true story of the writer/producer’s relationship with her now-husband.

Above all else though, the appeal of the show is that finally we get to see a healthy relationship between two adults. Yes, they both have their flaws and baggage, but whenever an issue comes up between them, the writers – instead of caving to the example set by pretty much all romcoms and creating drama and misunderstanding – give them the benefit of open, honest, healthy communication. Despite their rather significant differences, you can actually believe that the relationship lasts longer than half an episode because of the way they both approach and invest in it.

On a less serious note, the show also contains the best first kiss in TV history (even better than New Girl), and Adam Brody saying “I can handle you” is pretty much the hottest thing to ever happen on screen, for all overthinking women everywhere.

So, to summarise: Everybody Wants This. (Plus, it’s already been renewed for season 2, so it’s worth investing your time and hopes.)

Bottom line – is it worth the stream?

Yes absolutely, why aren’t you watching it already??

Watch this if you like:

  • 2000s nostalgia

  • People who know how to communicate
