LOOKING for honest reviews on new and old movies and series? we have you covered, in this new series, Odette Parfitt gives her views on new and old movies and lets us know if it’s worth the stream.
Before I launch into this review, I feel it’s only fair to tell you that princess movies are a bit of a weak spot/guilty pleasure for me, and therefore you may not agree with this review.
The Princess Switch (2018)
Basic plot:
Stacy is a baker who could do with some Christmas cheer, so her business partner enters them into a baking competition in a made-up country. Here she meets a princess who looks like her twin, and who seizes the opportunity to ditch her shoulder pads and switch places with Stacy. Cue the hijinks.
How it was (probably) pitched to the producers:
It’s Freaky Friday, except with grownups and royals and castles – and it’s Christmas!
Thoughts:
- The best friend character looks like a Ken doll.
- Basically, everyone in this movie has a weird inclination to immediately share details of their personal lives with the old man who keeps popping up everywhere. I have many questions.
- So it takes about an hour for these two to learn everything they need to know to switch places. Sure, that seems legit.
- The most realistic thing about this is the scene where the fake-duchess walks around in a nightgown and a fancy hat, cause that would probably be the first thing I’d do while fake-princessing.
- Also, why is it called the Princess Switch instead of the Duchess Switch?
- The king looks like an Afrikaans oom. I have named him Gert.
- The phrase “A warm horse is a happy horse” should immediately go on a T-shirt.
- If your best friend is Type A and tears up a to-do list in front of you, it’s not something you should be impressed by; it’s a clear-cut cry for help.
- Also, I’ve been a journalist and just decided to interview someone because you recognize they on the street seem like a bit of a stretch, but OK.
Bottom line:
It’s fun.
Watch this if you like:
- Princess Diaries
- Fairly predictable but heartwarming storylines
- Literally any other Hallmark-y Christmas movie
