My Life with the Walter Boys (2023)
Platform: Netflix
Basic plot:
Jackie Howard is living her best life in Manhattan as the teenage daughter of a fashion designer, when a terrible accident happens and both her parents and her sister are killed. Now she has to move to Colorado to live with her mom’s best friend, who has never heard of birth control and is literally raising 10 other children. Some of said children are attractive teenage boys, so, you know, #drama.
How it was probably pitched to the producers:
It’s The Summer I Turned Pretty meets The Kissing Booth, but we throw in horses and rodeos.
Thoughts:
The first thing you need to know about my opinion of this show is that I binge-watched all 10 episodes in the space of 24 hours.
That doesn’t necessarily make it good from a critical point of view, but it was pretty captivating.
The show very clearly and quickly sets up a love triangle between Jackie (who dresses like she is 40) and two of the brothers, Alex and Cole. Alex is a nerdy sweetheart with freckles and lovably-imperfect teeth, and Cole is the hot older guy with an attitude, anger issues and a tendency towards self-destructive behaviour. My big problem is: I am past the age where I enjoy the glorification of the tortured soul who is mean to the leading lady at every turn and then we’re expected to ship them.
Beyond that though: the other siblings and a lot of the supporting characters are fun, it’s surprisingly easy to keep track of the different siblings even though they are all introduced within five minutes, and there is enough going on aside from the love triangle for it to keep you entertained (but let’s be honest, you stay for the love triangle, and then judge yourself for being that invested in teen drama).
Bottom line – is it worth the stream?
Yes – if teen drama is your kind of thing, then it’s definitely worth a watch. Despite my gripes above, I have recommended it to several people already.
Watch this if you like:
- Any of the shows/movies I’ve compared it to
- Draaaaaaaama
- The idea of seeing Donna from Suits as a Colorado ranch mom to nine boys (and one girl who barely features)
