LOOKING for honest reviews on new and old movies and series? we have you covered, in this new series, Odette Parfitt has you covered and lets us know if it’s worth the stream.
Basic plot:
Carmy has years of experience as a big-time New York chef, but his new job is much more challenging: saving and running his late brother’s failing Chicago sandwich shop.
How it was probably pitched to the producers:
Let’s bring all the stress of Hell’s Kitchen, mix it with Chicago accents and stubborn personalities, and see how long viewers can hold out.
Thoughts:
I love this show on so many levels. Every single cast member is an excellent choice, the characters are so well-written that you don’t always love them but you always root for them, and everyone speaks like normal people instead of spouting Dawson’s-Creek-level monologues.
Watching Carmy, with all his anxiety, navigate the challenges of winning a new team’s respect and saving a business, is addictive. He is supported by a host of relatable, difficult characters who all redeem themselves at one point or another, and you really do want to celebrate all the wins with them.
All of that being said…good grief this show is stressful to watch. You really feel the pressure of the kitchen when the pressure is on, and you hold your breath through socially tense episodes, and occasionally your nerves are frayed by the time the credits roll.
Bottom line – is it worth the stream?
There’s nothing quite like it on TV right now, and it has a slew of awards to prove it, so yes –
definitely watch it.
