As Women’s Month draws to a close, the spotlight turns to the power of storytelling, with a special edition of the Kasi Bioscope dedicated to celebrating women in film.
Hosted by PHAT (Pure Hot and Talented Pty Ltd) and supported by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and President Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP), the event forms part of the Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy series. Taking place on 30 August at The Athenaeum, this edition will not only showcase films but also provide a platform for dialogue on gender representation in the industry.
While Kasi Bioscope has long been known for uplifting emerging filmmakers, this special screening will place female creatives at the forefront. The event will feature its traditional film screenings, followed by a panel discussion with some of the region’s most notable voices in the arts. The line-up includes Rafieka Davis (film director, producer, lecturer), Nompumezo Buzani (author, poet, playwright, and actor), Asipezi Jita (actress), along with other experienced industry leaders.
Local filmmaker and Kasi Bioscope team member Vuyolwethu Lamani reflected on the impact of the platform:
“Kasi Bioscope has opened a powerful space for women to tell their stories in their own voices. For me, it is more than just a screening, it is about affirming women’s talent, breaking boundaries, and proving that our narratives belong on every screen.”
This Women’s Month tribute not only honours female filmmakers but also reaffirms the vital role of inclusive storytelling in shaping South Africa’s creative future.
