Why No-Gift Parties Are Becoming the Trendiest New Celebration Style

Have you heard about the “no gift party” trend? Popular in the U.S., this idea has guests contribute towards a big present instead of bringing individual gifts. Known as a “Fiver Party” (since guests often give $5), it simplifies gift-giving by pooling cash that the birthday kid’s parents use to buy a larger present.

I mean, sounds like a dream right? Just put the cash in a card and you’re good to go. It’s a hassle-free way to handle party presents without the stress of gift-hunting.

But some moms have mixed feelings about this. They find it tacky or odd to show up with just cash, while others add a small treat or sticker to make it feel more personal.

Despite the mixed reactions, many parents are embracing it! They love it because their kids already have plenty of toys and pooling money for one special gift makes more sense.

I have mixed feelings, too. On one hand, asking for cash can feel uncomfortable, and I appreciate the personal touch of a thoughtfully chosen gift. Like when a friend made adorable bow-bedecked socks for Kari or got her a tutu skirt she adored. There’s something special about gifts given with love.

But I’m not entirely against “no gift parties.” They’re convenient, cost-effective, and help avoid piles of unused toys. Plus, they can fund a memorable experience or a big-ticket item your child really wants.
