THE temperatures are dropping in the GQ and mornings are becoming a little more difficult, especially since it’s still dark when that alarm clock rings. Worst of all, we have to leave our warm beds for the chilly outside and all because we need to earn a living, get our children educated and, apparently, it isn’t such a good thing to stay at home all the time.
The truth is, very few of us are not stealing an extra few minutes to stay in bed in the morning, which ultimately results in a frenzied effort to look presentable, make school lunches, try to remember to take lunch for ourselves, feed the kids and get ready to face the day. Admittedly this leads to skipping your first meal and drink for the day, because, well, you kind of saw to everyone else.
Let’s not mention that the school run is often done with one eye open and your brain not quite aware of its surroundings. We all need the most famous elixir for adulthood by the time we’ve waved goodbye at the school gates. Yes, we need coffee!
The first-morning coffee doesn’t fall into the category of slow sipping, long conversation coffee dates-we need it to go! So, if you’re dying for a coffee fix but don’t have the time to sit down.
Here are the 5 top coffee-to-go spots in Gqeberha:
Mastertons
I mean, you knew this was going to be first, right? This local roastery is part of our Metro’s heritage. It’s world-class coffee and it’s proudly Gqeberha…ian. They have come a long way from their fragrant Roastery off Russell Road and have now made a home in Main Road Walmer where they sell coffee on the go. You can’t mistake the delicious taste of Mastertons, no matter which blends they’re serving up for the day.
Stir
This little coffee shop is linked to the Oxygen Life Church in 2nd Avenue, Walmer and they’re open from 07:00 AM, Monday to Friday. Their prices are unbeatable, especially on their coffees. They serve up delicious breakfast cups and a variety of baked goods, which makes this the perfect stop for your breakfast on the run.
Jack’s Bagels
Another Gqeberha original is the Jack’s Bagels Franchise. There are very few suburbs in Gqeberha that don’t have a Jack’s nearby. The best part about this little Jewish Style Deli is that there’s coffee for you all year round, they boast one of the best coffee slushies in town, giving you your coffee fix in summer and winter. They also open their doors at 07:00 AM, which is the perfect time to get your wake-up fix, served cold or hot.
The Travelling Barista
The title says it all. Jacobus Stadler can usually be found on the corner of 8th Avenue and Prospect Road, Walmer. However, he moves around town bringing caffeinated magic to all who see him. He also has a fun Kiddochino option, so both you and your “mini-me” can start the day with a delicious beverage.
Seattle Coffee Co.
While not quite native to the GQ, Seattle Coffee Co. can be found all over the Metro. Their coffee is one of the most sought-after take-out coffees in the city and you’ll often find a queue at your local petrol station café, waiting on this delicious blend. Although some might find the pricing more in the range of pay-day coffee, it’s worth treating yourself to their delicious drinks.
The coffee culture in Gqeberha is definitely on the rise, with more people looking for a great coffee, rather than a quick cup of instant coffee made at home. There’s also something about starting your day with an excellent cup of coffee.
Don’t let the cold mornings get you down, bring a ray of sunshine to your tastebuds, and your belly, all while you go about your morning drive.
