Unlike our monthly Nelson Mandela Bay What’s On guide, this isn’t meant to be a list of everything happening in each city. Instead, think of it as our monthly edit of events worth knowing about, whether you live there, happen to be travelling or simply want to know what’s happening beyond the 041.
Here are our September picks.
011 FOCUS: JOHANNESBURG
947 Joburg Day
When: 5 September 2026
Where: Crocodile Creek Polo Club, Lanseria
One of Johannesburg’s biggest music days returns just in time for spring.
947 Joburg Day takes over Crocodile Creek Polo Club on Saturday, 5 September, bringing some of South Africa’s biggest artists together on one stage.
The line-up includes Kabza De Small, Cassper Nyovest, DJ Zinhle, Sun-El Musician, Mi Casa and a special collaboration between Mörda and the Soweto Gospel Choir.
Gates open at 10:00, with general access tickets priced at R550.
Springboks vs All Blacks
When: 5 September 2026, 17:10
Where: FNB Stadium, Johannesburg
Few sporting rivalries need less introduction.
The Springboks and All Blacks meet at FNB Stadium on 5 September as South Africa and New Zealand add another chapter to one of international rugby’s greatest rivalries.
For Joburg sports fans, this is easily one of the biggest dates on the September calendar.
GRXXVY Escape ft. Oscar Mbo
When: 12 September 2026, 14:00
Where: The River Cabin, Johannesburg
For a different kind of Saturday outing, GRXXVY Escape heads to The River Cabin on 12 September.
Oscar Mbo and Nasty C are among the names attached to the Johannesburg event, which gets underway at 14:00.
Standard Bank Joy of Jazz
When: From 25 September 2026
Where: Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg
September ends on a musical note with the return of Standard Bank Joy of Jazz.
The long-running event takes over the Sandton Convention Centre from 25 September, continuing its place as one of the major fixtures on Johannesburg’s cultural calendar.
For jazz lovers, this is one of our easiest 011 Focus picks of the month.
021 FOCUS: CAPE TOWN
MAMMA MIA! The Musical
When: 3 September to 11 October 2026
Where: Artscape Opera House
Here we go again.
The global musical MAMMA MIA! returns to South Africa, bringing its combination of family, friendship and ABBA favourites to the Artscape stage.
Audiences can expect songs including Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Super Trouper and Take A Chance On Me.
The Cape Town season begins on 3 September and continues until 11 October, with tickets ranging from R200 to R580.
Cape Town Kota Festival
When: 5 September 2026
Where: The Ostrich, Ostrich Ranch, Philadelphia
One of South Africa’s favourite street foods gets an entire festival dedicated to it this September.
The Cape Town Kota Festival brings together different kota experiences from across the Western Cape for a day of food and entertainment.
Cape Town Tourism has included the festival among its September picks, with tickets available through Computicket.
WOMAD Cape Town 2026
When: 15 to 24 September 2026
Where: Various venues across Cape Town
World of Music, Arts and Dance, better known as WOMAD, brings ten days of music, arts, dance and storytelling to venues across Cape Town.
The programme combines local and international artists and includes events ranging from concerts and contemporary performances to Indigenous storytelling.
Among the scheduled highlights are a Korean K-Pop Culture Concert at Artscape, Global Echoes at the Baxter Concert Hall and a Miriam Makeba tribute.
With much of the programme taking place in the build-up to Heritage Day, it’s a fitting addition to our September 021 Focus list.
Bafunny Bafunny: South African Festival of Comedy
When: 25 and 26 September 2026, 18:00
Where: Grand Arena, GrandWest
Some of South Africa’s biggest comedy names come together at GrandWest for Bafunny Bafunny.
Trevor Noah leads the national comedy team as captain, with Eugene Khoza as vice captain and Ntosh Madlingozi as coach.
The Cape Town shows take place at the Grand Arena on 25 and 26 September, with tickets starting from R475.
031 FOCUS: DURBAN
Durban Street Food Festival
When: 4 to 6 September 2026
Where: The Pavilion Shopping Centre, Westville
If there’s one city that knows its food, it’s Durban.
The Durban Street Food Festival returns from 4 to 6 September with three days of food, music and entertainment.
Visitors can expect food trucks, food arenas, lifestyle zones and live entertainment, with flavours drawing inspiration from Africa, India, Asia and beyond.
The entertainment programme includes Veranda Panda and the KZN Youth Orchestra on Friday, Muzi on Saturday and Mafikizolo on Sunday.
Shall We Dance
When: From 11 September 2026
Where: Durban
Dance takes its place on the September cultural calendar with the return of Shall We Dance.
The production is among the events currently highlighted by Durban Tourism for September, with performances beginning on 11 September.
Tickets start from R150.
Sjava, Simmy and Q Twins at Old Mutual Music at the Lake
When: 24 September 2026
Where: Durban Botanic Gardens
Heritage Day gets a distinctly KZN soundtrack this year.
Sjava, Simmy and the Q Twins come together at Durban Botanic Gardens for a special Heritage Day edition of the Old Mutual Music at the Lake series.
The three acts represent different sides of contemporary South African music while sharing strong KwaZulu-Natal roots.
Gates open at 13:00, and visitors are welcome to bring picnic blankets and camping chairs.
eThekwini Shisanyama Festival
When: 26 September 2026
Where: Berea Rovers, Durban
September’s Heritage Month celebrations continue with the second annual eThekwini Shisanyama Festival.
The event celebrates the food, music and people behind South Africa’s shisanyama culture, bringing them together at Berea Rovers on 26 September.
It’s food, music and culture in one place and a fitting way to round off our 031 Focus picks for the month.
What’s happening beyond your postcode?
From a Springbok-All Blacks showdown in Johannesburg and ABBA favourites in Cape Town to a Heritage Day concert in the Durban Botanic Gardens, there is plenty happening beyond the Bay this September.
And that is exactly what our Focus sections are about.
