What You Need To Know About Anti-ageing Supplements

AMERICAN celebrated author and motivational speaker Carlos Wallace once said “True beauty comes from within” – as much as this is a good metaphor to live by, practising self-acceptance, a positive mental outlook and generally not being a horrible human being, the truth is beauty does come from within, it starts with your health and that is my bull’s eye to anti-ageing.

Biological ageing is accelerated by outside factors such as stress and toxins in the environment, which affect not only our physical appearance but the functions of our internal organs and general health.  Dietary changes can minimize and slow down the signs of ageing for a healthier and more youthful appearance. Enter supplements. In this article, we look at some less common vitamin supplements that are scientifically backed, that I have personally tried and tested for health and a more youthful appearance.

The who’s who of anti-ageing ingredients

Glutathione

Dubbed ‘the mother of all antioxidants” by scientists – glutathione is an antioxidant that is naturally produced in cells. Some of its main functions in our bodies include but are not limited to, making DNA, supporting immune function, breaking down free radicals & regenerating vitamins C & E. By taking glutathione in supplement form you may reduce oxidative stress & symptoms of certain chronic conditions.

Beauty benefits:

  • Cell regeneration, fewer wrinkles and plumper skin
  • Reduces hyperpigmentation.
  • Improves overall body complexion.
  • Diminishes scars and acne.
  • Reverses signs of ageing
  • Improves symptoms and appearance of inflammation.

MSM

Methylsulfonylmethane or MSM is a naturally occurring compound found in plants & mammals. Those familiar with this supplement use it to relieve joint pain & inflammation – it is popular with those suffering from arthritis.

Beauty benefits:

MSM helps with skin regeneration and repair, boosts collagen production, and reduces inflammation and signs of ageing. It is also proven to improve hair growth in some individuals.

Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body & what keeps your skin from sagging. It serves as one of the main building blocks for your bones, skin, hair, muscles & connective tissue.

Beauty benefits:

  • Reduces wrinkles
  • Reverses skin ageing
  • Improves skin hydration
  • Improves skin elasticity
  • Smoothens skin

NAC

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a supplement form of cysteine, a semi-essential amino acid. NAC has many health benefits, including replenishing antioxidants and nourishing your brain. It also boosts the production of glutathione in your body.

Beauty benefits:

  • Reduces melasma or hyperpigmentation
  • Detoxes the body from free radicals
  • Replenishes glutathione leading to cell regeneration
  • Protects cells from toxins
  • Improves insulin resistance, therefore assisting with weight management

VITAMIN C

Most of the above supplements work even better in addition to good old vitamin C. Vitamin C, otherwise known as Ascorbic acid, is essential for maintaining good bones and teeth as well as tissue repair, and immunity boosting. It is also beneficial for skin health.

Beauty benefits:

  • Boots collagen
  • Increases skin brightness
  • Minimizes wrinkles & fine lines
  • Diminishes scars

There are many more other supplements in the market that are powerful anti-ageing agents and certainly worth a try, the above are the ones that have certainly assisted me in my quest for youthful longevity, vibrancy and immunity. All the supplements listed are easily available in most pharmacies, however, it’s important to first speak to your healthcare provider/Doctor before taking supplements & embarking on a health journey.
