AWARE.org is spearheading efforts to promote responsible drinking and prevent alcohol-related harm across South Africa. Through education, advocacy, and community partnerships, their mission is to cultivate a society where individuals make informed decisions about alcohol consumption.
#NOtoUnder18: Safeguarding South Africa’s Youth
AWARE.org’s flagship initiative, #NOtoUnder18, is dedicated to preventing underage drinking with a multifaceted approach. By combining education, community engagement, and policy advocacy, this initiative aims to protect young people by creating alcohol-free environments and empowering them to make healthier choices.
Significant Progress in 2024
The first half of 2024 saw remarkable achievements in AWARE.org-funded programs. Participants demonstrated a 59% increase in knowledge and awareness about the dangers of underage drinking. Moreover, 71% of those involved committed to reducing or abstaining from alcohol consumption, highlighting the effectiveness of these targeted interventions.
ICAN Programme: Engaging the Community
The bespoke ICAN Programme, implemented by SANCA National, surpassed expectations by reaching over 300 participants. This program has been pivotal in fostering a deeper understanding of the consequences of underage drinking and promoting healthier lifestyle choices among the youth. Additionally, the aftercare ICAN programme successfully graduated 30 adolescents, providing ongoing support and significantly reducing the likelihood of relapse.
Golden Harvest Underage Drinking Rehabilitation Programme
The Golden Harvest Underage Drinking Rehabilitation Programme enrolled 80 adolescents, with 49 successfully completing the program. This initiative addresses the complex needs of adolescents struggling with alcohol dependence, offering them the necessary tools and support for recovery and reintegration into society.
Overcoming Challenges and Building on Success
While these programs have achieved significant success, challenges remain. Participants come from varied educational backgrounds, which can sometimes hinder group work and program delivery. Despite these obstacles, the progress made is both positive and encouraging.
Mokebe Thulo, head of brand at AWARE.org, emphasized the importance of these achievements: “These results are a testament to our collective efforts in creating a safer environment for our youth. We are committed to continuing our work with communities to provide the necessary support and education to prevent underage drinking. By addressing the challenges and building on our successes, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of young people across South Africa.”
Future Initiatives: Roundtable Discussions
In its ongoing efforts to combat underage drinking, AWARE.org is hosting a series of roundtable discussions. These events will serve as vital platforms for engaging key stakeholders, including government representatives, educators, community leaders, and healthcare professionals. The goal is to develop and share best practices and innovative solutions.
The upcoming roundtable discussion will focus on eradicating underage drinking and creating safe, alcohol-free environments for the youth in South Africa. This initiative underscores AWARE.org’s commitment to fostering collaborative efforts and ensuring that young people are equipped with the knowledge and support they need to make healthier choices.
AWARE.org’s relentless efforts and strategic initiatives are making a tangible impact, bringing South Africa closer to a future where responsible drinking and the well-being of its youth are paramount.
