A new fitness movement is quietly gaining momentum in Kariega, and it’s about far more than just exercise.
UltraFitt Uitenhage is a purpose-driven fitness community built on empowerment, accessibility and service. The initiative believes that physical activity can be a powerful tool to uplift individuals while strengthening the wider community, creating a culture where people challenge themselves and connect with one another at the same time.
From Homecoming to Community Action
UltraFitt Uitenhage was founded by Herschelle Joshua Jantjies, who was born in Uitenhage but has been living and working in George for the past five years. After spending years unable to return home for more than a weekend due to work commitments, December 2025 marked the first time he was able to spend two full weeks back in his hometown.
That return sparked action.
Concerned by the rise of gangsterism and the overall condition of the area, Jantjies decided to create a positive alternative that could benefit both young people and adults. On the very day he arrived home, Tuesday 23 December 2025, he hosted an UltraRun and UltraBootcamp, officially launching UltraFitt Uitenhage.
Free, Inclusive and Community-Focused
UltraFitt Uitenhage is designed for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. What sets the group apart is that sessions are free, with personal coaches available at every workout to guide and support participants.
The goal is not individual recognition, but collective progress. The message is simple: make Uitenhage stronger by building healthier, more connected people.
Growing Numbers and Stronger Connections
What started with just eight participants, only one of whom was a woman, has grown steadily. Training sessions now regularly attract between 15 and 20 people, with more women joining the movement. Beyond the workouts, a WhatsApp group keeps members informed and accountable, while a Facebook page helps reach the broader community.
According to organisers, even people who never exercised before are now taking their first steps toward a more active lifestyle, something that continues to fuel the group’s motivation.
Values That Go Beyond Fitness
UltraFitt is built on clear principles: consistency over intensity, community over ego, accountability, discipline, integrity and accessibility for all fitness levels. Fitness is seen as a platform for service, not just self-improvement.
The long-term vision is to create a healthier culture that encourages responsibility, teamwork and positive role modelling, especially for young people.
Cleaning Up While Moving Forward
One of UltraFitt Uitenhage’s biggest upcoming initiatives is a Clean-Up Run scheduled for 28 March 2026. Participants will start the run with empty plastic bags and collect litter along the route, finishing with bags filled with trash.
The aim is to challenge illegal dumping, inspire children through action, and show how fitness can translate into meaningful change. The event will include a fun run or walk, loud music, games for kids and elders, and a strong emphasis on inclusivity. No experience is needed, and walkers are fully supported by coaches, with traffic officials and water points in place for safety.
A Movement With Long-Term Vision
UltraFitt Uitenhage is not a once-off project. The founder plans to return to Uitenhage every quarter to host events that keep the community engaged, motivated and moving forward together.
Support from schools, local businesses and organisations is welcomed, whether through venue access, sponsorships or logistical support. The hope is that cleaner streets, active families and positive role models will help build a safer, stronger Uitenhage over time.
As the UltraFitt team puts it: change doesn’t arrive on its own. It’s created through small actions, done together, with purpose.
