With the Easter long weekend fast approaching—a time typically marked by surging traffic volumes—Transport Minister Barbara Creecy is taking a proactive stance to ensure safer roads across South Africa, starting right here in Gqeberha.
On Sunday, 13 April 2025, the Minister will lead a high-impact, multi-agency road safety operation on the N2 at King Neptune, in collaboration with local and national traffic enforcement teams. This initiative forms part of a broader campaign to curb road fatalities and promote responsible driving during one of the year’s busiest travel periods.
The operation, which kicks off at 12:00 PM, brings together a powerful coalition of stakeholders: from national and provincial traffic authorities, the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Police, South African Police Service, to interfaith groups, community structures, and the private sector. Their collective mission? Reinforce the message that road safety is a shared responsibility under the theme #ItBeginsWithMe.
The Easter weekend often sees thousands of travelers heading home or to places of worship, making it a critical time to heighten law enforcement visibility and public awareness. Minister Creecy’s visit follows the official launch of the Easter Period Road Safety Campaign on 20 March 2025 in Pretoria, part of a year-round strategy led by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
Expect to see increased law enforcement presence, road safety education, and real-time traffic interventions during the activation. With National Traffic Police, Provincial Traffic teams, and supporting road agencies all working in sync, the campaign promises to deliver both visibility and impact where it’s needed most.
