We’re wrapping up our Tourism Tuesday segment with a big one… a cruise and sandboarding adventure for four. When I first heard about Sundays River Adventures, offering a combination of sandboarding and river cruising in the charming town of Colchester, I was immediately intrigued. So, my husband and a few friends joined me for a day filled with adventure and the tranquil beauty of nature.
Setting Sail for Adventure
Our day started at A Taste of Africa Restaurant in Colchester, the vibrant hub for this dual experience. After warm greetings and a quick exchange of pleasantries, we signed indemnity forms and made our way to the river to board the boat bound for the sand dunes.
Shredding the Sands – Wax, Walk, Slide!
Our guide led us up a gruelling walk up the dunes, he handed us out boards and sleds and talked us through what to expect upon reaching our destination. Before sliding down, hr took great care to wax the boards, ensuring extra slipperiness so we could fly down the dunes with ease and control.
At the top of the highest sand dune, we paused. The sight was breathtaking; endless curves of golden, brown sand. Grains of warm sand, slipping underfoot and encasing our feet in soft warmth. The tutorial was swift, a quick lesson on foot placement, body posture and how to balance on the board like a natural. And then off we went.
The descent was pure, unfiltered excitement and a touch of fear. The moment you launched yourself, speed took over. Gravity propelled you downward in a blur, carving through the sloping sand. Every nerve fired as the board picked up pace, until a slight misalignment sent you tumbling. There’s a playful comedy in face planting or rolling on the dunes, but the adrenaline, laughter and camaraderie made every tumble worth it.
River Cruise: Calm After the Rush
The next part of our adventure offered a perfect balance. We hopped back into the river boat for a calm one hour cruise along Sunday’s River. The transition from heart-pounding speed to serene drifting felt almost cinematic.
We got to appreciate the change in landscape from vibrant dunes to lush, natural scenery and water mirroring the sky, rippling with movement.
What struck me most wasn’t just the scenery, but the shared hush of contentment and connection. We got to eat snacks and drinks while conversation flowed, laughter, storytelling peppered with awe at our beautiful surroundings.
The golden sunlight hit the river, casting beautiful reflections that danced across the water. A mix of salt-tinged air and the cool breeze off the river. Time felt stretched, gentle and present.
Final Thoughts
Sunday’s River Adventure delivered more than just fun; it gave a full spectrum experience, daring, hectic and restful, social and reflective. You begin with heart-racing slides down the dunes, tumbles, and end by drifting into a peaceful riverscape, side by side with friends and snacks in hand.
If you’re looking for an activity that combines high-energy thrills with mellow immersions in nature; this combo of sandboarding and river cruising is a rare gem. It captures both the spirit of adventure and the soul of relaxation.
