In a world where TikTok trends come and go faster than a lunchtime special, one Boardwalk-based eatery has managed to cut through the noise. Enter Balkan Burger—the vibrant, loud, funny-as-heck street food spot that’s gone from 500 followers to nearly 36,000 in what feels like the blink of an eye. The reason? A hilarious stream of skits, behind-the-scenes chaos, and personality-driven content from the team—led by the larger-than-life Mr B, effervescent hostess MJ, super creative Moe and an ever growing cast of charismatic staff.
But with social media success comes skepticism. Is the food actually that good? Is the vibe real, or is it all filters and clever editing?
We had the same questions—so on a recent Saturday morning, we went in undercover. No press passes, no media alerts—just hungry stomachs and curiosity.
First Impressions (and Strong Coffee)
We arrived early and anonymous. First surprise? The coffee slaps. Like, really slaps (I’m probably too old for that phrase but its the only one that works). Friendly baristas with noserings and attitude who know what they’re doing. Music? Vibey. Decor? A stylish mashup of Balkan warmth and urban cool. And MJ—the hostess who’s already a local social media star—is even more dazzling in real life.
Then there’s Mr B himself. If you’ve been wondering whether he’s just hamming it up for TikTok, we’re here to tell you: he’s not. We watched him joking with staff, bussing tables, and genuinely working the floor. He even came over to personally apologise for a short wait—which wasn’t even their fault. Judging by the pace bread was flying out the kitchen, it’s clear they can barely keep up with demand.
And yes, for those curious social media fans constantly asking: we still don’t know Mr B’s relationship status. But with those sparkly blue eyes, that dry Balkan humour, and a knack for remembering regulars, he might need to get used to people asking if he’s on the menu.
And the Food?
Shockingly legit (thats one is from my age group) Flavoursome, fresh, and generous—these are no ordinary burgers. The lemonade was squeezed fresh in front of us with lemons Mr B brought in himself that morning. We literally saw the bags. And the food? Properly seasoned, juicy, and full of personality—just like the team serving it.
Our only two (very minor) gripes: the portions are huge (the mini burger isnt mini, come on) and we personally prefer cream cheese frosting on our carrot cake. Otherwise? No notes.
A Little Backstory: Family, Flavour, and Fate
Balkan Burger was born in Joburg in 2011 after a missed lunch date sparked a delicious idea: to bring Serbian-style gourmet burgers to South Africa. A brother-sister duo teamed up—armed with mom’s secret recipes, dad’s produce hookups, and a dream—and started serving from a small market stall.
Today, the brand has grown into a nationally recognised food truck and now a Boardwalk favourite with social media stardom, loyal fans, and queues out the door.
Verdict? Not Just For the Gram
Sometimes, viral food joints crumble under real-world expectations. This isn’t one of those times. Balkan Burger isn’t just serving up likes—it’s serving legit burgers, heart, humour, and hospitality.
And if you’re still not sure? Pull up, grab a burger, and see for yourself. Just don’t be surprised if you end up in one of their skits.
(PS. We brought some of the sourdough and cubata home and could see why there is a queue in the morning)
