Disney’s beloved High School Musical Jr. will take centre stage at the Savoy Theatre from 2 to 10 July 2026, bringing with it a talented local cast, familiar songs and a feel-good message that has resonated with audiences for nearly two decades.
Presented by the Nicki Ray Academy of Performing Arts, the production features academy students alongside performers from the local theatre community and promises an energetic celebration of friendship, self-discovery and following your dreams.
Based on the Disney Channel phenomenon that launched a global franchise, High School Musical Jr. follows basketball captain Troy Bolton and academically gifted Gabriella Montez as they challenge expectations and audition for their school’s musical production.
Along the way, they inspire classmates to embrace their individuality and discover talents they never knew they had.
A Musical Packed With Fan Favourites
Audiences can look forward to iconic songs including Breaking Free, We’re All In This Together, Get’cha Head in the Game, and Stick to the Status Quo.
For Nicki Ray Academy founder and director Nicki Rayepen, the story’s message remains as relevant today as it was when audiences first fell in love with the East High students.
“High School Musical Jr. is ultimately about believing in yourself,” says Rayepen.
“It’s about finding the courage to explore your talents, even when people expect you to stay in a particular lane.”
Months of Preparation Behind the Scenes
The production is the result of months of rehearsals, vocal coaching, choreography sessions and teamwork.
Rayepen says watching the cast grow throughout the process has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.
“Some students arrived at auditions feeling nervous and unsure of themselves. Today, they are stepping onto the stage with confidence, commitment and genuine excitement.”
The production also provides young performers with valuable experience in a professional theatre environment while helping them develop confidence, communication skills and resilience.
A Strong Local Creative Team
Adding to the excitement is a creative team packed with local talent.
Director Darren Rockman joins the production while on a break from the international tour of CATS, while Caleb Zola serves as musical director.
The choreography team includes international breakdance sensation Cheslyn Meyer alongside Zukiswa Mpongoshe, Azizipho Magida and Skye Phillips.
All members of the creative team are current teachers at the academy.
Why This Matters
Productions like High School Musical Jr. continue to play an important role in creating opportunities for young performers in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Beyond singing, dancing and acting, students gain practical life skills including teamwork, discipline, communication and confidence.
“Theatre teaches life skills that stay with students long after the final curtain falls,” says Rayepen.
“Confidence, teamwork and resilience are all part of the journey.”
