041Fitness columnist Nadine Lahana shares her views on the tips and tricks promoting “getting rid of unwanted cellulite now”

WHEN a brand of fitness pants claims that their product removes unwanted cellulite and will get your thighs thinner in no time, you have to know that their target market is a mere 90% OF WOMEN!
Yes, 90% of women have this HARMLESS skin condition that causes lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen.
We don’t even want to know HOW they substantiate their claim.
We just want to get our hands on those pants…right?
SAVE YOUR BUCKS!
I mean go ahead and buy the pants if they make your butt look good, but in reality what they’re promising is that their own personal, secret blend of cotton and Lycra, really is the answer to eliminating an increase in fat cells pushing up against the skin 🙄
Great. MAGIC PANTS! We can all stop worrying about scoffing those Oreos and lemon creams now!
This claim is like saying “Makeup will make your acne vanish!”
CELLULITE DIET & EXERCISE...
There’s lots to say here, but the short answer is, excess FAT GAIN will result in pockets of fat cells pushing up against the skin.
THE SOLUTION TO REDUCING IT’S APPEARANCE…
Try to replace the big contributors found in heavily processed foods, with healthier, freshly sourced foods.
Shop in FRESH produce.
Cook from scratch.
Avoid foods that require a shelf life as they are loaded with the added salts, fats and sugars that contribute to excess fat stores and cellulite.
THE EXERCISE EFFECT:
You do not need to do hours of Cardio or even join a gym.
MOVEMENT = better CIRCULATION & CALORIES out.
Power walking and Bodyweight exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups and sit-ups will move fat stores.
If you can, try adding some weight training in addition to body weight, as muscle mass can certainly reduce the appearance of loose, wrinkled, dimpled skin.
THE SAD FACTS
According to MentalHealth.org “One common contributor to poor body image is pressure to live up to an ‘ideal’ body type or appearance and shame or other uncomfortable emotions when we perceive ourselves as not meeting this standard.
The internalisation of this ideal has been linked to body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and depressive symptoms in children and young people (19, 34, 35). These distressing emotions were reflected in our survey, where 37% of young people said they felt upset, and 31% said they felt ashamed about their body image. “
WE NEED TO BE MORE MINDFUL OF OUR MESSAGE...
Wouldn’t it be more honest, not to mention more likely to have a healthy approach to firming “fat on the inner thighs” if this campaign was designed around differing body shapes showing how to put the fun in exercise while showing off their FLATTERING pants?
It’s a sad reality that so many fall target to these dangerously deceptive marketing ploys that are designed to give the image of “we get you..here’s a hug and the answer to all your problems.”
