DELON LE ROUX
In an era where escapism is a scrolling thumb away, two Eastern Cape content creators are about to take us beyond the feed—and straight into the unknown. With grit, GoPros, and an ISUZU D-Max wrapped in camo, Roland Gaspar and Frank “The Man” Martens, better known as The Great Adventure Guys, have officially launched their boldest undertaking yet: 100 Days of Adventure.
Unveiled at a high-spirited launch on Wednesday evening, this ambitious video series is not your average travel vlog. Instead, it’s being positioned as a first-of-its-kind South African content campaign: a video-a-day chronicle of exploration, legend-hunting, and full-throttle storytelling—served with a strong dash of humour and heart.
The duo behind the camera (and often in front of it, mid-stunt) are not fresh-faced influencers or adrenaline junkies chasing likes. They’re seasoned creatives with stories of their own—and a burning desire to make new ones.
Gaspar, well known to local audiences as an actor, director, scriptwriter, motivational speaker, and former AlgoaFM Afternoon Drive host, teams up with his cousin Martens—a multi-talented photographer, IT and network engineer, cable specialist, and yes, a trained nurse with medical experience from the United States. Their chemistry is as undeniable as their credentials, with Martens cast as the “Laurel” to Gaspar’s “Hardy.”
And their mission? Equal parts Going Nowhere Slowly, Mythbusters, and Jackass. Expect outrageous antics—like a full-body stunt burn, or a Gladiator-style duel between Gaspar and Garth Collins, the SA actor known for his role in Black Sails and David and Goliath. But that’s only half the story.
The other half lies in the dusty towns, whispered legends, and cinematic landscapes of the Eastern Cape and Garden Route. From hunting the elusive shapeshifting monster of Steytlerville to standing at the real-life grave of someone named Harry Potter, the Great Adventure Guys are taking their cameras (and their audience) deep into the folds of local folklore and forgotten corners.
And they’ll be doing it in style.
“When we chatted with ISUZU Motors SA about the Adventure, they saw the vision and decided to send us on our way in the perfect adventure vehicle, an ISUZU D Max 3.0 Turbo Diesel Double Cab with 4×4 capabilities. They even wrapped it in camo!” said Gaspar at the launch. “We promised viewers we’d take them everywhere, and now we properly can.”
But for all the thrills and travel reels, it’s the emotional core of this campaign that lingers. Both men are 51 years old. Both chose to press “go” on a dream they’d long put on hold. That courage to change direction, publicly, unapologetically, is the adventure behind the adventure.
“We are two 51-year-old guys who realised that we were one decision away from changing our lives and pursuing our long-held dreams,” Gaspar shared during his speech. “We aim to inform, entertain, amuse, and hopefully, also to inspire viewers to make their own bold decisions to pursue their adventures.”
He continued, drawing from a heartfelt exchange with Martens:
“Frank told me, ‘I hear so many people telling the same stories they did 5 years ago, and I don’t want that for my life. I just want to make new stories.’ And it hit me: We don’t need to change the world, we all just need to recognise that whoever we are, wherever we are, we are capable of the courage to look ahead with excitement again, simply by deciding to make new stories.”
With daily videos rolling out on their YouTube channel @GreatAdventureGuys, and extra behind-the-scenes content on Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok under the same handle, the campaign is more than a show – it’s a movement.
One that encourages every South African, regardless of age, location, or title, to trade in nostalgia for a roadmap. And maybe, just maybe, press “record” on a new chapter of their own.
The road awaits.
