The Bay Bucket List: 10 things every Nelson Mandela Bay local should do once

Living in Nelson Mandela Bay comes with a unique problem: we get so used to the beauty around us that we forget to experience it.

The beaches become part of the daily commute. The landmarks fade into the background. The places visitors travel hundreds of kilometres to see become things we’ll “get around to one day”.

So consider this your challenge.

Whether you’ve lived in the Bay your whole life or only recently arrived, here are 10 experiences every local should tick off at least once.

1. Watch the sunrise at Sardinia Bay

There are few better ways to start a day in the Bay.

With its wide stretch of sand, crashing waves and unspoilt scenery, Sardinia Bay is one of those places that reminds you why people fall in love with this part of the world.

Take a coffee, leave your phone in your pocket for a few minutes and enjoy the view.

2. Climb the Cape Recife Lighthouse

Standing proudly on the city’s southern coastline, the Cape Recife Lighthouse has been guiding ships for more than 170 years.

The views from the top are worth every step and offer a completely different perspective of the Bay’s coastline.

3. Take a photo at the Donkin Reserve

Whether you’re a history lover, a photographer or simply looking for one of the best views in the city, the Donkin Reserve deserves a spot on your list.

The lighthouse, pyramid monument and giant South African flag have become iconic symbols of Nelson Mandela Bay.

4. Spot dolphins from the beachfront

One of the best things about living here is that wildlife sightings are part of everyday life.

Take a stroll along the beachfront and keep an eye on the water. Dolphins are regular visitors and often put on a show for lucky spectators.

5. Explore the Sundays River and Alexandria Dunes

Just outside the city lies one of the Eastern Cape’s most spectacular natural attractions.

A boat cruise along the Sundays River offers beautiful scenery and access to the Alexandria Dune Field, one of the largest active dune systems in the southern hemisphere.

6. Walk the Sacramento Trail

If you’ve never tackled the Sacramento Trail between Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay, you’re missing one of the Bay’s most scenic walks.

Expect dramatic coastal views, indigenous vegetation, fascinating history and plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the scenery.

7. Visit the Route 67 Art Trail

Even many locals have never properly explored Route 67.

The public art installation celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of service through a collection of artworks, sculptures and historical landmarks in the city centre.

It’s one of the most unique cultural experiences in Nelson Mandela Bay.

8. Watch the sunset at Maitlands

Sunrises may get all the attention, but Maitlands delivers some of the most breathtaking sunsets in the region.

Pack a picnic, bring a camera and prepare to be reminded why this stretch of coastline is so special.

9. Attend Ironman weekend at least once

You don’t need to be an athlete to appreciate Ironman.

Every year thousands of competitors and supporters descend on Nelson Mandela Bay, transforming the city into a celebration of endurance, determination and community spirit.

Even if you’re only there to cheer from the sidelines, it’s an experience worth having.

10. Visit Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve

A hidden gem just outside the city, Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve offers beautiful hiking trails, indigenous plant life and incredible views.

It’s a reminder that some of the Bay’s best attractions aren’t found on the beachfront.

How many have you done?

Maybe you’ve completed all 10. Maybe you’ve only managed three or four.

Either way, Nelson Mandela Bay has a way of surprising even those who’ve lived here for decades.

So tell us: what would you add to the ultimate Bay bucket list?
