The annual Algoa FM Charity Golf Day is teeing up for impact this June — and this year, it’s all about dementia awareness and support.
The Association for Dementia and Alzheimer’s of South Africa (ADASA) has been selected as the official beneficiary of the popular fundraising event, taking place on Thursday, 12 June, at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club.
Here’s what you need to know:
Why It Matters:
- Funds raised will support ADASA’s critical work in Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding towns, helping people affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as their families.
- ADASA reached over 1,500 people between April and December 2024 through community outreach, education, and support groups in Gqeberha, Jeffrey’s Bay, Makhanda, East London, and Kenton-on-Sea.
Dementia Isn’t Just About Age:
“There are over 100 types of dementia, and they can affect people of all ages — not just the elderly,” says Dr Heather Rauch, regional manager for ADASA Eastern Cape.
With no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease — the most common form of dementia — ADASA focuses on education, awareness, and hands-on support, particularly in underserved areas. Most of their team is made up of professional volunteers.
“This partnership not only strengthens our services,” adds Rauch, “but helps shine a spotlight on the growing need for dementia care in our communities.”
Algoa FM’s Ongoing Support:
“Algoa FM has been raising awareness about mental illness for over a year through our programming,” says Lesley Geyer, Algoa FM’s marketing manager. “This partnership with ADASA takes that commitment even further.”
