Stutterheim Hosts Agricultural Field Day on Climate-Smart Farming

The Dohne Agricultural Research Institute in Stutterheim is gearing up for its annual Information Day, also known as the Agricultural Field Day, taking place on today, Thursday, 18 September 2025.

This year’s theme, “Promoting food and nutrition security through climate-smart technologies,” is both timely and urgent as farmers across the Eastern Cape continue to adapt to changing weather patterns and market pressures.

Why It Matters

Unlike the traditional way of sharing research through pamphlets, booklets, or workshops, the Field Day brings the science directly to the field. It is practical, interactive, and hands-on, making it easier for farmers, students, and agri-entrepreneurs to see how new technologies can work for them.

What You’ll See

The event, led by MEC for Agriculture Nonceba Kontsiwe, promises a packed line-up:

  • Live demonstrations: animal production, crop management, aquaculture, and horticulture technologies in action
  • High-tech tools: drones, hydroponic systems, and tick-borne disease control methods
  • Exhibitions: Livestock Improvement Scheme (LIS) and laboratory services
  • Career Expo: targeting Grade 11 learners to spark interest in agriculture as a science and career path

More Than Just a Field Day

The Information Day is not only about showcasing research. It is about connecting people. Farmers get to engage with scientists, students can explore career opportunities, and stakeholders share ideas on how to build a more resilient, food-secure province.

The Dohne Agricultural Research Institute continues to be a vital hub for problem-solving research that makes a difference on the ground. This year’s Field Day is set to reinforce its role as a leader in climate-smart farming innovation.
