With just four games left in the season, Spear of the Nation FC remain firmly in control of the Inland Stream, sitting top of the table with 34 points from 13 matches. Head coach Thabiso Msongelwa has credited the team’s strong foundation and mentality for their consistency at the summit.
“We had a very good start,” said Msongelwa. “Now our job is to maintain our good run without any pressure. We respect all our opponents.”
No Pressure Despite Tight Race
Spear’s closest challengers, FC Ravens, are just two points behind on 32, setting up a thrilling finish to the campaign. However, Msongelwa insists his side is not feeling the heat.
“Remember, we went into the Christmas break topping the charts, so for us we are not feeling any pressure.”
The title race appears to be a two-horse contest, with Matta Milan trailing 14 points behind the leaders. Still, Msongelwa is keeping his squad grounded as they push for promotion.
“We are not putting any pressure on our players. We just rejoined the league after a long spell, so we are trying to maintain ourselves as a team that finishes well without putting pressure on ourselves.”
Learning From Setbacks
Spear’s last defeat came in December — a 2-0 loss against FC Ravens. Despite the result, the coach believes the performance was not a reflection of their tactical approach.
“I want to believe even on that day our tactical approach was spot on. We were unlucky and gave away goals from our own errors. They didn’t really create or penetrate us. From there, we corrected and moved forward.”
Since that defeat, Spear have shown resilience and maturity, reinforcing their credentials as genuine title contenders.
Tough Test Against Mighty Eagles
This weekend, Spear face Mighty Eagles FC at Umthatha Stadium in what promises to be a crucial fixture in the run-in. With so much at stake, complacency is not an option.
“We treat every team with respect. We know with Mighty we are facing a tough assignment, but we are preparing very well,” Msongelwa added.
With the title race intensifying and promotion dreams within reach, all eyes will be on Msongelwa and his Spear of the Nation side as they aim to maintain their composure and finish the season strongly.
