She’s done many things. But now she’s doing stand-up.
Multi-award-winning clown, theatre-maker and comedic troublemaker Sophie Joans is stepping up to the mic with her first-ever “real” stand-up comedy show, Sophie Joans is a Real Comedian. After years of selling out theatres with genre-bending, clown-led and character-driven work, Joans is finally doing what critics, peers and internet commenters have long demanded — telling actual jokes.
Setup. Punchline. Mic. No ukulele. No meowing (probably).
A Reputation She’s Ready to Face
Known for her bold, unpredictable comedic style, Joans has toured internationally and earned accolades including a Gold Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival, a Savannah Comic’s Choice Award nomination for Most Innovative Performance of the Year, and a place among the five nominees for Best Solo Female Performer at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Yet despite her success on stage, she has never performed a traditional stand-up hour — until now.
In this sharp, self-aware and hilariously vulnerable new show, Joans confronts her own reputation head-on. After years of being told she’s “not a real comedian,” accused of clowning too hard, singing too much, and occasionally flashing without a proper punchline, she’s decided to face the music. With real jokes only.
Imposter Syndrome Meets Industry Reality
Directed by acclaimed musical comedian Phil de Lange, Sophie Joans is a Real Comedian promises a fearless, high-energy set that both dismantles and embraces comedy tropes, blending Joans’ signature absurdity with razor-sharp observational stand-up.
The show leans into themes of imposter syndrome, creative rebellion and the chaos of navigating the comedy industry, something many creatives in South Africa’s performing arts scene will recognise.
One of SA Comedy’s Most Daring Voices
Joans began performing comedy at just 19, famously completing a gruelling challenge of 100 gigs in five months. Since then, she has toured across South Africa and Europe, created multiple award-winning productions including ÎLE, NETPHLIX, Dog Rose and Ka-BOOM, and built a reputation as one of the country’s most daring new comedic voices.
In 2025 alone, she received three Standard Bank Ovation Awards and was named one of Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans.
Now, with her debut stand-up show, Joans invites Gqeberha audiences to witness her biggest creative risk yet, standing alone on stage with nothing but a microphone and a pocket full of jokes.
