Secret Sunrise Back In The Bay

SECRET Sunrise is back in Nelson Mandela Bay giving attendees the chance to gather outdoors for a silent dance and meditation experience on March 26.

The local branch of Secret Sunrise is working towards hosting monthly events for the public along with their current team-building activities.

“Our past events have been popular because they offer something completely unique. Secret Sunrise is about music, movement and connecting in Joy. The format of the event encourages people to get out of their comfort zone, find their own authentic movement, connect with family friends and strangers, and just have fun. During a session I often find myself saying; It’s ok to look a little silly, have a laugh at yourself and those around you,” says Emily Jones who manages Secret Sunrise Eastern Cape.

“I think the fact that there’s no pressure to look or move a certain way, and participants are encouraged to let loose, is what makes the events popular.”

The events combine elements of mindfulness, meditation, breathwork and dance to create a holistic experience.

“Attendees are given Bluetooth headphones on arrival. We start the set off slowly, with meditative music, so that participants ground, and get into the moment. We’ll then start with more upbeat songs, and guide participants until they are encouraged to completely let loose and dance their hearts out,” she said.

Jones says that she was hooked on the concept when she attended her first dance in Johannesburg in 2018.

“The first dance was an ‘aha’ moment for me, I thought to myself, it is possible to feel joy in this grown-up body. It is possible to feel complete freedom.”

She has been dancing, learning to facilitate and organise dances ever since.

The sets are curated for people aged 1 to 101, and no dance experience is required.

“We welcome all bodies and abilities, and try to incorporate a complete mix of songs to make a diverse audience feel at home. My hope is that by the end of the dance, each participant will have found a new wiggle, a playful wink, and will leave with a glimmer of joy in their heart.”
