Sikelelwa Mhlanga is making waves as she continues her journey in South African football and aims to represent her country at the upcoming 2024 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Championship, showcasing her talent and determination, writes 041SPORTS columnist Sihle Sonto.

At just 18 years old, Sikelelwa Mhlanga is a talented player for the City Lads Ladies Team, already catching the attention of both fans and coaches alike and earning her place among the nation’s brightest young athletes. Despite her team’s struggles, Mhlanga’s determination shines, and her recent achievements show that she’s only just getting started.

In August 2023, Mhlanga received her first major career breakthrough when she was called up to represent the South African U20 squad. Being recognized on such a significant platform was a dream come true. “I was excited because it shows me that I’m a very good player,” Mhlanga said, reflecting on the moment she got the call. This opportunity also came with a prestigious nomination for the Young Player of the Season in the Hollywoodbets Super League for the 2023/24 season—a nod to her standout performances and undeniable talent.

Nominated for Greatness

The nomination as Young Player of the Season boosted Mhlanga’s confidence, cementing her belief in her abilities. “It shows that I played well last season,” she explained. Now, with her confidence soaring, Mhlanga has her eyes set on the future, including her second call-up to the national squad for the 2024 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Championship.

“My goal is to win the Women’s Championship, and as a bonus, it would be great to be named Player of the Tournament,” Mhlanga says with determination. She’s not just playing for personal accolades but is motivated to lead her team to success.

Facing Challenges Head-On

While Mhlanga’s personal career is on the rise, City Lads Ladies Team is currently facing challenges in the Hollywoodbets Super League. They are sitting in 14th position with just 19 points, fighting to stay in the league. “We try by all means to make sure we don’t drop back to the Sasol League,” she explains. With a smaller squad, Mhlanga sometimes finds herself playing in different positions to help the team. “You can sometimes find me playing forward,” she added, highlighting the difficulties the team is enduring.

To improve, she believes her team needs more players and more fight. “We need to ensure that we don’t fall behind and look for other players next season,” Mhlanga says with a leadership mindset. As a captain, she understands the importance of unity and effort, especially during challenging times.

Lessons on and off the Field

Throughout her football journey, Mhlanga has learned valuable lessons, both about the game and life. “I’ve learned that when you play football, you need to fight for what you want. Don’t be jealous if someone else gets called up or wins Woman of the Match. Just wait for your time, because you never know, you might get something even better.”

Her role model, Siphamandla Klassen, has been a major influence on her playing style and attitude. “I admire the way he plays football, and he’s not rude to others. As a captain, I must lead both on and off the field,” she shared, emphasizing the importance of being a positive role model for her teammates.

Advice for Aspiring Players

Mhlanga’s advice to young female players is grounded in patience and respect. “Don’t rush things, and always respect your coaches. Do what they say and focus on improving,” she advises.

Balancing football with other commitments, like education, is not easy for her. “When we travel, I have to study on the road,” she admits, but her dedication to both her education and her sport shows just how committed she is to achieving her goals.

Looking to the Future

As she looks ahead, Mhlanga has big dreams for both her personal life and her team. “I would like to have my own business in the future,” she says. As for her football career, she is focused on helping City Lads finish the season in a strong position. “I would be happy if, by the end of the league, we are in good standing,” she adds.

Sikelelwa Mhlanga’s journey is just beginning, but her talent, determination, and leadership have already set her on a path to greatness. As she continues to make her mark in South African football, there’s no doubt that this rising star is one to watch.
