Worth the Stream? 3 Body Problem (2024)
Platform: Netflix
Basic plot:
A group of London-based scientists/friends deal with a series of overlapping
bizarre events: the suicide of their mentor, an ominous countdown clock only one of them
can see, and a virtual-reality headset leading to a bizarrely realistic alternate world – all while
a surly detective tries to make sense of it all.
How it was probably pitched to the producers:
This is nearly impossible to answer without spoilers, but let’s go with “What if you couldn’t
trust anything you see?”
Thoughts:
Again, it is super tricky to review this without giving away too much of the plot, and since a
lot of the experience is built on revealing information as the story moves along, I really don’t
want to do that.
So let’s look at the show as a whole. The producers are the same guys who did Game of
Thrones, so there is a pretty impressive budget behind this project and quite a few familiar
faces for any GoT fans. The writing is smart, but it’s definitely not the kind of show you can
follow if you’re also playing on your phone (hey, no judgement, we all do it). In fact, it’s deep
sci-fi, so you probably have to be a fan of the genre to really sink your teeth into this.
On the other hand, the show makes a few strong points regarding human nature, scientific
progress, religion and many other borderline-philosophical topics. Benedict Wong is
especially excellently cast in his role as the sarcastic detective. The whole cast does a stellar
job – because even the characters you can’t relate to, are compelling in their own ways.
Bottom line – is it worth the stream?
It’s really good – but it’s not light-watching by a long shot, so it depends on what you’re looking
for.
Watch this if you like:
- Writing that doesn’t over-explain anything
- Sci-fi that is heavy on the “sci”
- Virtual reality gameplay
- Tales of political revolution in the Far East
