Playwright Brings Sold-Out Boxing Drama Gloves Off Home to Cape Town

After selling out theatres in Europe, Cape Town-born writer and director William Makin is finally bringing his original boxing drama Gloves Off home.

The production, which debuted to packed houses in Rotterdam, will run at The Homecoming Centre from 18 to 21 March 2026, marking its first-ever South African season.

At the centre of the story are childhood best friends turned rivals, Billy “The Kid” Buccaneer and Joe “The Prince” Bronco. Once training side by side, the two now find themselves preparing to face off at the SANABO Trials for the biggest title of their lives.

But Gloves Off isn’t just about what happens in the ring.

It’s about what happens when loyalty gives way to ambition, when friendship turns competitive, and when the person who knows you best becomes the one you have to beat. As the fight draws closer, tensions rise through press conferences, punishing training sessions and the growing pressure of the spotlight, all building toward one final showdown.

Blending the intensity of fight night with deeply personal storytelling, the production offers an immersive theatre experience that’s as emotional as it is high-energy.

Bringing the show home with an all-South African cast and creative team, Makin says the Cape Town run is a particularly meaningful moment for both himself and the production.
