In a significant move for water conservation, Orion Engineered Carbons South Africa has invested R68 million in a new water treatment plant at its Deal Party facility, setting a benchmark for sustainable business practices in the region.
The plant will treat wastewater from the nearby Fishwater Flats Wastewater Treatment Plant, allowing Orion to meet production standards for non-drinking water use, and freeing up precious drinking water for the community.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Gary van Niekerk praised the launch, stating, “Today’s event highlights the powerful outcomes we can achieve when business and government collaborate. This investment shows confidence in our city and sets an example for other major businesses to follow.”
As the only carbon black producer in Sub-Saharan Africa, Orion’s decision to utilise treated wastewater not only benefits the environment but also creates long-term financial advantages, as this resource is cheaper than traditional drinking water.
Orion’s Chief Executive, Corning Painter, emphasised the importance of this investment in a water-scarce area, stating, “We are proud to contribute to water conservation while continuing to deliver world-class products.”
Orion’s project is a trendsetting step, marking one of the first large-scale uses of treated wastewater in carbon black production—a move that is both environmentally and economically advantageous.
This milestone underscores the potential for industries to integrate sustainable practices into their operations while contributing to broader efforts to preserve water in the region.
