October Anime Highlights: New Releases, Big-Screen Thrills, and Tower of God’s Return

With so many new anime starting and so many coming to an end, 041ANIMATION columnist Faziela Harris-David shares some of the top news in the world of anime for the month of October.

For all you South African weebs, Ster-Kinekor is yet again doing the most and bringing another anime film to a big screen near you. They are currently showing “My Hero Academia: You’re Next”, the story revolves around Deku and his friends as they confront a new enemy known as Dark Might. This villain bears a striking resemblance to All Might, the hero who mentored Deku. As the story unfolds, the heroes are also faced with a bizarre, mysterious fortress that has appeared on Earth. This structure consumes both people and buildings, creating a significant challenge for the heroes to solve. Marking the third film in the franchise, this one is not to be missed.

For the Tower of God fans, we have the arrival of Season 2, Tower of God: Workshop Battle. It focuses on the events that occur around the battle that occurs every five years on the Workshop in 30th Floor and the meeting of Jyu Viole Grace with his old friends. The story begins two years after the onset of Jyu Viole Grace on 20th Floor, during the first part of the second volume Tower of God: Part 2 – The Prince of Zahard. The long arc finally ceased with Chapter 110 and was succeeded by the following arc, Tower of God: Part 2 – The Hell Train. What makes this even more exciting is that the opening theme song is being sung by Stray Kidz, which has made me absolutely squeal in delight!

We also have the release of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, set to release on Netflix on October 10th, based on the video game. The series continues right after the events of the Survivor trilogy of video games — Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider — and finds Lara (voiced by Hayley Atwell) abandoning her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures.

However, Lara must return home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection. Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she’ll be forced to confront her true self and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become.
