NMB Launches Women’s Month Integrated Safety Routine

Nelson Mandela Bay female law enforcement officers led from the front during a major roadblock on the N2, under the Neptune Bridge on Tuesday, 8 August 2023, to officially launch the Women’s Month integrated road safety campaign.

This comes as the country is celebrating Women’s Day on 9 August 2023 to honour the brave women of 1956 who marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest the carrying of passbooks during the apartheid era.

As women who work in male-dominated fields, the female officers attached to the NMBM Metro Police, NMBM Security Services, Provincial Traffic and SA Police Services partnered together to enhance their daily operations and to inspire more women to join the workforce.

NMBM Metro Police area commander, Colonel Raquel Paulsen said the partnership was aimed at promoting road safety ahead of the busy public holiday on Wednesday.

“This is work we do on a daily basis. All law enforcement agencies work together especially ahead of public holidays as it gets very busy on the road with people travelling across the country. It is a united effort from us as women to say we are committed to playing our role in keeping our communities safe. There will be more roadblocks like this throughout the month,” said Colonel Paulsen.

During the roadblock traffic fines were issued, and awareness and education on firearm control, gender-based violence and drought crises were conducted.

Mount Road Station Commander, Brigadier Crystal McClean highlighted the importance of community involvement in fighting crime.

“As women, we feel that we can lead in every way. We will use this month to protect our own, last year we lost a female colleague who was killed while on duty. Despite the challenges we are faced with on the job, we remain committed to our call of service, and we are strong and capable to lead in our respective roles. We call upon our communities to work with all law enforcement agencies to curb the high crime rate in our Metro, we all have a responsibility to play. We wish all women of NMB a happy and safe Women’s Month.”
