New Madibaz Women’s Coach Nolitha Mhlomi Aims to Elevate Mandela University Football

Women’s football at Mandela University is set for an exciting new chapter under the leadership of Nolitha Mhlomi, the newly appointed Madibaz women’s coach.

At just 27 years old, Mhlomi brings a wealth of experience both on and off the field. A former player, she has also made waves as an official, earning recognition as the most outstanding referee at the Women’s League national playoffs last season. She was even nominated for assistant referee of the year in the Hollywoodbets Super League, South Africa’s premier women’s football competition.

Now, her focus shifts to coaching, where she aims to keep the Madibaz competitive in the regional Sasol Women’s League, kicking off at the end of the month. Later in the year, she will set her sights on the University Sports South Africa tournament, determined to help her players grow.

A Coach with a Bigger Vision

Beyond matchday tactics, Mhlomi is passionate about player development. She is already working to encourage younger university players to compete in leagues and tournaments, ensuring they gain the exposure needed to prepare for future challenges.

“We want to see the team compete at the highest level,” she explains. “But first, we need everyone to be aligned, working towards the same objective.”

With a sport management qualification and a CAF D coaching licence, Mhlomi is well-equipped to take the team forward.

From Butterworth to the Big Stage

Growing up in Butterworth as the only girl in her household, she naturally gravitated towards football, playing alongside her brothers. She later became a key player for Manchester United Ladies, before injuries ended her playing career. However, her love for the game led her into refereeing and coaching, with experience at Vela High School, Cala High School, and Khanyisa School in Gqeberha.

Madibaz Football manager Mark Tommy believes Mhlomi’s insights into the Super League made her the ideal choice for the job.

“She brings her experience and network to the project,” he said. “Technically, she is one of the best officials in the country and on track for appointment to the prestigious PSL panel.”

With the Super League being televised, Tommy believes she will be a great ambassador for Mandela University and its female athletes.

More Than Just a Coach

Mhlomi understands that her role goes far beyond tactics. She describes coaching as “multifaceted,” often requiring her to switch between being a mentor, a parent figure, and a strategist.

“But I feel incredibly humbled and honoured to have this opportunity,” she says. “It’s a great chance to apply my skills and knowledge.”

She is already making her mark, having officiated in the season-opening Super League match between UJ and UCT on Sunday.

As she takes the reins at Madibaz Women’s Football, one thing is clear: Nolitha Mhlomi is here to make an impact.
