Nelson Mandela Bay’s Call Centre Boom: What Does It Mean for the Metro?

Nelson Mandela Bay is fast becoming one of South Africa’s leading call centre hubs, positioning itself just behind Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. This rapid growth in the Global Business Services (GBS) sector has put the Metro in the spotlight as a rising player in offshoring and customer service industries.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), in partnership with Business Process Enabling South Africa (BPESA), recently hosted a stakeholder engagement session in Newton Park. This gathering brought together key players, including the Coega Special Economic Zone, Eastern Cape Development Corporation, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, and Harambe Youth Accelerator, along with several major business service companies.

Why is This Growth Significant for Nelson Mandela Bay?

  1. Job Creation for the Youth
The call centre industry has already created more than 3,000 jobs for young people in the Bay, providing opportunities for both high school graduates and tertiary-educated individuals. With companies like Discovery Health, ISON, Startek, Dastile Wealth Insure, Outworks, and Teleperformance expanding their operations in the region, the potential for job growth remains strong.
  2. Boosting Economic Development
MMC for Economic Development, Tourism, and Agriculture, Bassie Kamana, emphasized that attracting business service investments is a priority for the Metro. “We are creating a conducive environment for investors, and our efforts are starting to pay off,” he said. The sector is not only bringing employment but also driving skills development and economic diversification.
  3. Nelson Mandela Bay as a Global Player
According to Teleperformance Vice President Leanne Felix, international investors are beginning to take notice of the Bay’s skilled workforce and growing infrastructure. The city is proving to be a cost-effective and talent-rich destination for outsourcing services, making it an attractive alternative to South Africa’s traditional BPO hubs.
  4. Support and Infrastructure Development
With the backing of government incentives, industry training programs, and economic zones like Coega, Nelson Mandela Bay is well-positioned to sustain and expand its call centre industry. As more companies choose the Bay for their operations, local infrastructure, digital connectivity, and business support systems will see further improvement.

What’s Next?

While the industry is thriving, there is room for further growth. To maintain momentum, the city must continue to invest in skills training, create an enabling business environment, and market itself as a competitive destination for global businesses.

For Nelson Mandela Bay residents, particularly the youth, this industry represents an exciting avenue for career opportunities and economic upliftment. With the right support, the Bay could soon cement its position as one of South Africa’s top call centre destinations.
