Nelson Mandela Bay Opens Its Heart to Dad in 041Online and Boardwalk Father’s Day Competition

Father’s Day means something different to everyone, but one thing became clear during 041Online’s recent competition with The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino: Nelson Mandela Bay has no shortage of love for the fathers and father figures who have helped shape lives through the years.

Readers were invited to share why the dads in their lives deserved to be celebrated, and the response offered a touching glimpse into the memories, sacrifices and quiet acts of love that define fatherhood.

From School Concerts to Fishing Trips

The entries showed that some of life’s biggest moments are often found in the little things.

One reader remembered how her father never missed an academic awards ceremony or Christmas concert, even when circumstances made it difficult.

Another spoke about the countless fishing trips shared with her dad, recalling that the laughter and memories created together mattered far more than whether they actually caught anything.

For one entrant, her father became her safe place after walking out of a difficult exam in tears.

“He didn’t care about the grade; he just wrapped me in a hug, told me everything would be okay and took me on a shopping spree just to see me smile again,” she shared.

Fathers Who Show Up

Throughout the entries, a common theme emerged. Fatherhood wasn’t measured by perfection, but by presence.

Readers described fathers who worked long hours to provide for their families, dads who fixed broken toys, husbands who put their children’s needs ahead of their own and grandfathers who stepped into fatherly roles.

One entrant wrote that her father had taught her kindness, perseverance and the importance of never giving up.

Another described her dad as “sunshine in human form”, while many simply spoke about fathers who made them feel loved, seen and safe.

Celebrating Husbands and Bonus Dads

Not all the tributes were directed at biological fathers.

Many readers used the competition to honour the fathers of their children, describing husbands who carry the responsibilities of family life with patience, humour and unconditional love.

Others celebrated bonus dads and fathers-in-law who had welcomed them as their own.

One entrant reflected on the beautiful relationship between her biological father and bonus dad, saying the respect shared between the two families had become one of the greatest blessings in her life.

Remembering Fathers No Longer Here

Some of the most emotional entries came from readers remembering fathers who have passed away.

Although Father’s Day can be bittersweet, many shared how the lessons, traditions and unconditional love left behind continue to shape their lives.

One entrant spoke about celebrating her late father by preparing his favourite meal and gathering with family to remember the man who taught her what unconditional love looks like.

More Than a Competition

What started as a Father’s Day giveaway quickly became something much bigger.

The stories highlighted the many forms fatherhood can take and served as a reminder that the strongest communities are often built on everyday acts of love, sacrifice and support.

Following careful consideration, Jenome Valint was selected as the winner of the competition.

The prize, sponsored by The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino, includes a one-night stay in a Luxury King Room for two, complete with breakfast, as well as two seats to the Father’s Day Buffet at either Kipling’s Brasserie or Bayside Pantry.

Celebrating the Heroes at Home

“We loved reading the stories shared by our readers,” said 041Online Managing Editor Eleanor Douglas-Meyers.

“Whether they were about fathers, grandfathers, husbands or bonus dads, the entries reminded us that some of life’s greatest heroes are found right here at home.”

041Online would like to thank The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino for partnering on the competition and helping create a memorable Father’s Day for one deserving family.

And to everyone who shared their stories, thank you for reminding us that behind every community are fathers and father figures whose love leaves a lasting legacy.
