Mental Health + Diabetes: What We Don’t Talk About Enough

Living with a chronic illness like diabetes isn’t just a physical battle – it’s an emotional one too. And in true 041 style, we’re here to keep it real.

From Gqeberha to the world, many people are silently dealing with the mental strain that comes with managing diabetes every single day. But here’s the thing: you’re not alone, and talking about it helps.

Bridget McNulty, co-founder of the online diabetes community Sweet Life, knows exactly what that emotional toll feels like. Through her own lived experience, she’s made it her mission to empower others with practical advice, especially around the part of diabetes we often don’t speak about: mental health.

“Diabetes burnout is real and it doesn’t just happen once. It comes in waves, and when it does, it can feel like too much to handle,” she says.

And she’s not the only one saying so. Clinical psychologist (and diabetes warrior) Daniel Sher adds:
“People with diabetes are at a higher risk for depression and anxiety. If you feel like you’re not coping, ask for help, whether from a friend, doctor, or therapist. You’re not in this alone.”

So, how do you manage your mental health while managing your blood sugar?

One thing at a time

You don’t have to win the whole game today. Pick one small, manageable thing that will make your day a little easier.

Drop the guilt

There’s no perfect blood sugar number. It’s not a test you’re passing or failing. It’s data – not a judgement.

Say it out loud

Speak to someone you trust, even if it’s just to say: “Today was hard.” Join WhatsApp groups, online forums, or communities like South Africans with Diabetes for support from people who understand.

Because really, that’s the whole point: you don’t have to do this alone.

As the editor of 041Online – and a diabetic myself – I know firsthand that diabetes doesn’t pause for bad days. But you can still give yourself permission to take it one step at a time. No judgement. Just care.
