Marc Lottering Heads To Gqeberha With So I Wrote That Musical

NELSON Mandela Bay fans of the vivacious Marc Lottering are in for a treat as he heads for our shores with his brand-new stand-up comedy show, SO I WROTE THAT MUSICAL.

He will be performing the 80-minute show at the Boardwalk Hotel, Casino, and Convention Centre on September 16.

After great success with his previous musical AUNTY MERLE THINGS GET REAL, his new solo stand-up show sees the hilarious Lottering reflect on the crazy process of moving between the worlds of stand-up comedy and full-scale musicals.

“As with all of my stand-up shows, I tend to talk about what’s currently happening in my life.  The title of this show references the fact that I’ve also branched out into writing and performing in big-scale musicals.  So in the show, I chat a little bit about that.  And inverters.  And William Shakespeare.  And estate agents.  And all sorts of other fabulous things,” says Lottering, hinting at an eclectic mix of topics to keep the crowd entertained.

The award-winning entertainer says that he has always believed in being honest when telling stories on stage and does not shy away from incorporating his life and heritage into his shows.

“I was reared on the Cape flats and then over and above that, I am South African.  So these two factors, whether I like it or not, have a significant bearing on how I interact with worldly situations.  Any story that I share on stage comes from those very perspectives.  And I’m happy that that’s the case. The South African perspective is often a very colourful one,” he said.

The stand-up comedian has been in the industry for over 20 years and prides himself on always evolving.

“Evolution is imperative. It cannot be stopped. Remaining stagnant signifies a huge problem.  My stories onstage continue to reflect existential shifts. This is not a conscious exercise as such – but it happens if you live consciously. For example, when I started out, my work and many of my punch lines were race-based. Because that’s what my heart was full of at that time. And so now at this stage of my life, I drift towards other issues.  Like why is it that I still crave sausage rolls even when I’m hanging out with posh friends at a 5-star restaurant,” he said.

When asked about how social media was impacting the South African entertainment industry, Loitering was as candid as always.

“Social media can kill you or she can be your friend.  If you’re going to dabble with social media as an artist, you have to be sure to make it work for you work-wise.   And then you also have to be cautious not to be seduced by it so that you find yourself defining your very existence around social media. I’m a comedian who likes to make South Africans feel good. If I have something hilarious to share, I will post it.  If I’m grumpy or upset about something, I shut up and stay far away from my phone.  Because publicly sharing anger and negativity simply won’t serve me.  Those emotions are reserved for my besties over a good bottle of wine,” he says with his signature brand of wise humour.

Lottering is no stranger to the Eastern Cape, making sure to always bring his shows to the local crowd.

“I’ve been performing in the Eastern Cape since the very early days of my career.  The audiences have always been fiercely loyal.  In some instances, one could say that we’ve grown up together.  Some fans have literally witnessed my comedy mature.  People who were watching me when they were still dating are no married couples with teenage kids.  And I often get to hear these stories in the foyer after the show. It continues to be a special journey,” said Lottering.

Despite coming to the Bay often, he says he does not have one specific place he always visits, instead, he is much like most Nelson Mandela Bay residents guided to their latest favourite spot through the love of good coffee and as he puts it; “a sexy breakfast”.
