Vickie de Beer, famed South African food writer and mom of three has spent 14 years mastering the complexities of Type 1 diabetes after her son Lucca’s diagnosis. Dive into her inspiring journey of dietary shifts and technological triumphs that transformed their lives.
Lucca’s Diagnosis and Early Management
In 2010, at just 8 years old, Lucca was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. From day one, Vickie and her family committed to meticulously managing his glucose levels. They adhered strictly to medical advice, implementing a low-GI diet, weighing all foods, and practising carb counting to keep Lucca’s carbohydrate intake within recommended guidelines. Regular tests of Lucca’s HBA1C levels consistently yielded positive results, earning him praise from his endocrinologist. However, the struggle with extreme glucose highs and lows persisted, leaving Vickie searching for better solutions.
A Revelation in Nutrition
A pivotal moment came when Vickie attended the launch of the Real Meal Revolution book by Prof. Tim Noakes. His insights on the adverse effects of refined carbohydrates and the benefits of a diet rich in fibrous vegetables, good proteins, and healthy fats sparked a new understanding in Vickie. Determined to stabilize Lucca’s glucose levels, she transitioned the family to a low-carb diet. The shift was challenging, taking nearly two months to show results. Eventually, Lucca’s glucose levels stabilized, transforming his health and energy levels. Vickie witnessed a dramatic improvement in Lucca’s well-being, reaffirming the impact of their dietary changes.
Embracing New Technology
In 2018, Lucca began using a continuous glucose monitoring system, revolutionizing their approach to diabetes management. This device provided a detailed view of Lucca’s glucose levels throughout the day and night. The ability to track trends and detect nighttime hypoglycemia significantly enhanced their management strategies. Lucca gained more independence, easily monitoring his glucose with a quick scan. The continuous data stream allowed for precise adjustments to his low-carb diet and insulin dosages, further stabilizing his condition. Recently, they upgraded to the FreeStyle Libre 2, which offers real-time continuous glucose monitoring and optional smartphone alarms, providing even greater peace of mind.
Ongoing Challenges and Triumphs
Managing Type 1 diabetes is a constantly evolving process. Even with the best tools and practices, unexpected fluctuations in glucose levels can occur. However, by eliminating refined carbohydrates and focusing on a low-carb diet, Vickie and Lucca have found a more stable and manageable way to live. The combination of dietary changes and continuous glucose monitoring has provided Lucca with greater control and peace of mind, allowing him to focus on being a happy and active teenager.
