Madibaz Prop Imibongo Mvuleni Gears Up for Varsity Shield Showdown

It’s all on the line for the Madibaz as they prepare to take on the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in a high-stakes FNB Varsity Shield semifinal at Madibaz Stadium this Friday.

For Imibongo Mvuleni, the team’s formidable prop, this moment is the culmination of an intense 2025 campaign that saw the Gqeberha-based side battle back from an early setback to secure a well-earned second-place finish.

A Season of Redemption

The Madibaz opened their season with a tough loss against Varsity College, who ultimately topped the tournament standings. But instead of letting that defeat define them, they turned it into fuel—storming back with six consecutive victories, including a dramatic 27-24 win over UWC last month, secured with a last-minute try.

That hard-fought resurgence not only booked them a spot in the playoffs but also a promotion-relegation clash against UJ, who finished seventh in the Varsity Cup.

Mvuleni, a 22-year-old from East London, has been a key player in this turnaround, anchoring the scrum and making his presence felt in every match. His impact was officially recognized when he was named Player that Rocks in last week’s triumph over CPUT—a moment he describes as both rewarding and motivating.

“I always strive to improve with each game, so being recognised in this way reassures me that I’m on the right track,” says the 115kg front-rower.

“The award also motivates me to keep working hard as we approach these crucial matches.”

Building a Winning Culture

Despite a squad that started the season with nearly a dozen debutants, Mvuleni has helped set the tone with his experience and drive.

“We were obviously disappointed to start with a loss, but we used it as motivation,” he explains.

“We kept reminding ourselves of what was at stake and worked hard to ensure we didn’t experience that same disappointment again.”

Now, with a must-win clash on home turf, Mvuleni is eager to seize the opportunity.

“Playing at home is special. The support is a huge boost, and I’m excited that we’ve reached this stage. We’re closer than ever to our shared goal of winning the competition and earning promotion to the Cup.”

A Coach’s Perspective

Madibaz head coach David Manuel has witnessed Mvuleni’s journey firsthand.

“He sent me a picture of himself on WhatsApp, saying he wanted to be part of the squad,” Manuel recalls.

“I told him he would need to move to Gqeberha to train with us, and since making that decision, his growth has been remarkable.”

The coach praises his scrummaging strength and emerging leadership role, emphasizing that his dedication extends beyond the field.

“Our approach is to develop players holistically, and ‘Imi’ has exemplified that through his work ethic. As a group, we aim to inspire others and show what can be achieved with dedication and commitment.”

The UWC Challenge

Looking ahead to the semifinal, Manuel acknowledges the threat posed by UWC.

“There’s a bit of nervousness because they’re a quality side with a strong set piece and structured game plan, but they also thrive in unstructured play.”

“We’ll need to be strategic in our decision-making and trust in the systems that have brought us success this season.”

With the Varsity Shield final spot and a chance at promotion on the line, Madibaz fans can expect an intense battle when the match kicks off at 1:45 PM on Friday.

Will the Madibaz rise to the occasion? Gqeberha will be watching.
