There’s a fresh energy buzzing through Gqeberha and it’s coming straight from the projector.
Local production company Pure Hot and Talented (PHAT PTY LTD) is tapping into the city’s growing love for homegrown film with Kasi Bioscope, an initiative that’s more than just movie nights. It’s a movement built around bringing stories back to the people who live them.
Screenings and workshops are taking place from June to September 2025, spotlighting stories shot and produced in Gqeberha and Kariega, including often-overlooked communities like KwaNobuhle, Motherwell, and Cleary Park.
“We saw how many powerful local stories never reach the people they’re made for,” says Mthobeli Moni, event manager at PHAT. “Kasi Bioscope gives filmmakers a direct line to their communities. It’s not just a screening, it’s a moment where the audience sees themselves on screen.”
Stories That Reflect Real Life
The films featured are made by aspiring and self-taught filmmakers, some with little formal training, all with a deep understanding of the environments they document. These are tales of resilience, survival, and the everyday magic of life in the Bay.
And the screenings are designed to be accessible, not in high-end theatres, but in community halls, sports centres, and local cultural hubs. It’s a film, reimagined for the township and inner-city audience.
More Than Movies: Workshops + Panel Talks
Kasi Bioscope isn’t just about watching films, it’s about creating pathways for more local creators. Upcoming events include:
19 July – Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre, Motherwell
2 August – Walmer Multipurpose Centre, Walmer
16 August – DeJa Vu Dance Studio, Cleary Park
30 August – The Athenaeum, Central (Panel talks + screenings)
All screenings start at noon. Expect raw stories, open dialogue, and a few goosebumps.
What’s Next?
The season wraps up with a powerful Women in Film event, celebrating female filmmakers and their role in shaping township cinema.
Whether you’re a film lover, aspiring creative, or just someone who wants to see your story reflected on screen, Kasi Bioscope is a call to show up and plug into something real.
