Join the October Beach Clean-Up: Local Businesses Urge Gqeberha Residents to Pitch In

Following the success of the July beach clean-up, local businesses are once again calling on Gqeberha residents to join forces and help keep our beaches clean. The Boardwalk, Pick n Pay, and Boardwalk Mall are organising another public beach clean-up at Hobie Beach on Saturday, 19 October from 9 am to 11 am.

In the July effort, approximately 200 participants worked together to collect 11 wheelie bins of waste, including 10kg of cardboard and paper, 3.7kg of PET, 2.8kg of aluminium cans, 17.4kg of glass, 12.5kg of plastic, and 8.6kg of steel. Five wheelie bins were filled with non-recyclable material, significantly improving the beach’s condition.

If you missed the last clean-up or want to contribute again, this is a great opportunity to make a positive environmental impact and connect with the community.

Why Keeping Our Beaches Clean Matters

  • Environmental Protection: Littering on beaches can harm marine life. Items like plastic bottles, cigarette butts, and fishing nets can injure or kill sea creatures.
  • Human Health: A clean beach is a safer environment for everyone. Leftover waste can attract harmful bacteria or create hazardous conditions for beachgoers.
  • Blue Flag Beaches: Nelson Mandela Bay is home to Blue Flag beaches, such as Humewood Beach and King’s Beach, which are recognised for their cleanliness, safety, and eco-friendly practices. Regular clean-ups help maintain these prestigious statuses and preserve their beauty for residents and tourists alike.

By keeping our beaches clean, we protect our local environment and maintain the city’s reputation as a coastal gem. Join the effort this October and be part of the change!
