It’s All Systems Go for the Colchester Development Run

Get ready to lace up those running shoes! The 9th edition of the Colchester Development Run, proudly sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, is set to take place this Saturday, 25 January 2025.

This much-anticipated event, organised by Eastern Province Athletics (EPA), promises a family-friendly atmosphere with races over 10km and 5km. As one of the Legacy Project Events supported by the municipality, the run aims to unite the community and inspire the next generation of athletes.

Fostering Future Stars

A key highlight of the Colchester Development Run is its commitment to youth development. Up-and-coming junior athletes are granted free entry, reflecting the Metro’s dedication to promoting athletics in historically underserved areas. This initiative has already produced notable athletes such as Sinawo Poti, who triumphed in the 5km race at just 15 years old. Today, Poti is a competitive athlete, finishing in the top five overall in last year’s event.

Preparations in Full Swing

Race Director Micheal Mbambani assures participants that meticulous planning has gone into ensuring a smooth and safe race day. “We have confirmed the course route, arranged for sufficient volunteer support, coordinated with a medical team on standby, and partnered with Traffic Services to ensure a safe and successful event,” Mbambani shared.

The fast-paced course is expected to attract a strong turnout, with the LOC aiming for 1,000 entries. As of Thursday, 23 January 2025, over 600 participants have already registered, setting the stage for an exciting event.

A Sporting Destination of Note

Cllr Bongekile Mankahla, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, emphasized the broader significance of the event. “This aligns with our vision to promote a healthy, active, connected community, while driving economic growth and positioning Nelson Mandela Bay as a premier sporting destination. We look forward to a successful and enjoyable event,” Mankahla stated.
