Sophakama Ladies FC had a standout season last year, winning their stream and earning a spot in the National Playoffs, where they faced some of the country’s toughest competition. As they gear up for a new campaign, Sihle Ndalwentle Sonto sat down with head coach Richard Poni to reflect on last season’s highs and lows, the lessons learned, and the team’s goals for the road ahead.
Reflecting on Last Season’s Success
Coach Poni wasted no time praising his squad for their achievements last season, despite facing numerous challenges.
“Yes, we had a fantastic run, even though we faced many challenges. But we managed our journey very well, and we finished strongly in our province,” he said.
Their ability to stay focused and deliver under pressure saw them secure a place in the National Playoffs, a well-earned reward for their dedication and hard work.
Lessons from the National Playoffs
While their provincial dominance was undeniable, the National Playoffs presented a different challenge. Poni admitted that the team’s performance fell short of expectations.
“I must say we did not have a good performance in the National Championships due to some internal challenges, and it showed in our performance,” he revealed.
Despite the disappointment, the experience has been a valuable learning curve. The team is now focusing on overcoming these internal hurdles to ensure they are in top form for the new season.
Overcoming Challenges for the Upcoming Season
One of the biggest challenges facing Sophakama Ladies FC is player availability. Many of the squad members juggle school, work, and other commitments, making it difficult to have a full squad at training.
“One of those challenges is to have a full squad of our players in training every day, but at the moment, we just can’t have them all due to other commitments,” said Poni.
As a coach, finding a balance between training consistency and player availability will be key to their success this season.
Opening Fixture: An Early Test Against Navy Galaxy
The team will kick off their season with an away fixture against Navy Galaxy in East London on April 12, following a rescheduled league start. Poni knows the road ahead won’t be easy, as teams across the league have strengthened their squads.
“We are a team that fights for the league title every season, and it’s not easy because this season, teams have strengthened their squads,” he said.
Still, he remains confident in his players’ ability to compete, highlighting their hunger to finish what they started last season.
Season Goals and Squad Strengthening
With a clear strategy in mind, Poni is focused on game management and squad depth to improve their performances.
“Our plan this season is to manage our games better than last season, and we hope our new signings will do well within our squad,” he explained.
With a mix of fresh talent and experienced players, Sophakama Ladies FC is shaping up to be a serious contender once again.
A Season of Promise Ahead
As they step into a new campaign, Sophakama Ladies FC carries the momentum of last season’s success and the lessons learned from their National Playoffs experience. With a determined squad and a clear game plan, they are ready to take on the Eastern Cape Sasol League with confidence, unity, and an unshakable will to succeed.
As always, Sophakama Ladies FC is a team to watch! Keep an eye on them as they chase another thrilling season.
