Luxury beauty experiences are often associated with larger South African cities, but Bliss is proving that Nelson Mandela Bay belongs in that conversation too.
This week, Bliss partnered with Kérastase for the first in what is expected to become a series of elevated hair events in Gqeberha, drawing a sold-out crowd of women from across the city for an evening centred around beauty, luxury and community.
Hosted by Sonja Tifloen, the event sold out within just three days, with demand becoming so high that fake tickets even began circulating online.
From Stormy Weather to a Packed Runway
Despite severe storms and unpredictable weather conditions in Nelson Mandela Bay leading up to the event, the evening adapted seamlessly with a last-minute venue adjustment that ultimately added to the atmosphere. The newly renovated Seattle Coffee Company became the runway venue, while Bliss itself was transformed into an intimate luxury event space for guests to explore and experience throughout the evening.
Rather than live styling demonstrations, guests were presented with completed runway-ready looks created by the Bliss team using Kérastase products. The event also featured a touch-and-feel station where attendees could experience the luxury haircare range firsthand and spoils in the form of a goodie bag.
Throughout the evening, Tifloen made a point of highlighting the people behind the event’s success, repeatedly thanking her team for helping bring the vision to life.
It quickly became clear that this was more than a salon event. It was a family effort and a community experience. Even Tifloen’s sons played a role behind the scenes, assisting with content creation, planning and even preparing desserts for guests.
Snacks and drinks were served as attendees moved between the runway experience and the salon space, creating an atmosphere that felt both polished and welcoming.
A Celebration of Beauty and Diversity in the Bay
One of the most striking elements of the evening was the crowd itself. Guests embraced the black-and-blush dress code in completely different ways, reflecting the individuality and diversity of women in Nelson Mandela Bay. Different ages, body types, personal styles and hairstyles all existed in the same room, creating an atmosphere that felt inclusive rather than exclusive.
That balance between luxury and accessibility appears to be central to the Bliss vision.
By bringing premium haircare experiences and fashion-forward beauty culture to Gqeberha, the event signalled a growing appetite for sophisticated local experiences that are often reserved for larger metropolitan areas.
If this first event is anything to go by, Bliss and Kérastase may have started something much bigger for the Bay’s beauty industry.
