How To Make Delicious Sandwich Bread On A Budget

041Budget columnist, Nakita De Souza-Plaatjies shares a quick and easy sandwich bread recipe, that won’t break the bank.

What’s up with the cost of living!

As we all know the economy is in very unstable place. Petrol prices and food prices are reaching highs we never thought possible. I’m no financial expert, but I do try my best to save money where I can.

And one of my focuses has to be on food. I know I can’t be the only one noticing the “shrinkflation” happening with our everyday staples.  Package size shrinks and yet the price goes up. The quality get poorer and yet the price goes up.

I’ve been trying to make small changes in my weekly spending. The first one is on buying bread. The quality of the bread we buy is just something else, you purchase it today and by the morning there would be strong yeast smell or sometimes even mould developing.

I’m going all “Nara Smith” for the next few months and I’m starting with a daily staple Sandwich Bread.

Here’s my recipe and some tips for keeping it soft & fresher for longer.

Once the bread is cut, use a piece of paper towel to wrap the exposed edge of your bread in cling wrap and store it in an airtight container. I promise this will last longer than 4 days if your family doesn’t demolish it as soon as it comes out of the oven. If you are running out of sandwich ideas, homemade bread makes the best French toast, sweet or savoury.

Ingredients

3/4 cup of water lukewarm
1/2 cup of milk lukewarm
1 packet of yeast

In a bowl and let the yeast bloom

3 cups of flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tbs Sugar

Method

Give this flour combo a mix and slowly add your blooming mix, while mixing it. Once all your blooming mixture is in the flour bowl, knead your dough adding 3 tablespoons of butter 1 at a time. Keep kneading until everything is well combined.

In a greased bowl leave your dough to rest in a warm place for an hour.

Take the dough roll out flat and roll it up like a Swiss roll. Place this into your greased bread pan, and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Place in your heated oven (180°c) and bake for 35-40 mins until golden brown.
