Life can change in an instant. For Rushana Ahmed, that moment came on October 9, 2021, when a head-on collision claimed her sister Raeesa’s life, along with three others, leaving only one survivor. The pain and shock of that day still feel as raw as they did when she first received the phone call. Yet, out of this tragedy, a new purpose has emerged: an annual charity event in Raeesa’s memory, aiming to bring hope and comfort to those in need.
Transforming Grief into Purpose
In the aftermath of the accident, the journey toward healing has been long and arduous. To honor Raeesa and keep her spirit alive, Rushana decided to start a fundraiser. Last year, her efforts raised over R25,000 for the Gelvan Park Frail Care Home. This year, she is turning her attention to the Algoa Frail Care Centre.
An Insightful Visit
Visiting the Algoa Frail Care Centre on Mission Road was an eye-opening experience for Rushana. The children there face immense challenges, and the resources available are limited. Seeing their courage and resilience inspired her to dedicate the 2024 fundraiser to improving their lives. Her goal is to ensure these children feel loved and supported, just as Raeesa always made others feel.
Introducing ChariTEA
The upcoming event, set for June 9, 2024, will take the form of a “ChariTEA.” Inspired by the elegance of a high tea, Rushana has reimagined the concept to infuse it with a charitable spirit. The event will be hosted at The Barn, bringing together 250 remarkable women for an afternoon of delicious snacks, entertainment, and heartfelt community support.

Remembering Raeesa
Raeesa was a beacon of joy and kindness. She was friendly, loving, and always surrounded by friends, enjoying activities like stance events, camping, and hiking. She had just graduated from Westering High School and was about to start her studies in education at Varsity College when the accident occurred. Her life was filled with promise and excitement for the future.
Raeesa and Rushana shared an incredibly close relationship. She wasn’t just Rushana’s sister; she was her best friend. They shared everything, including a room, by choice. Raeesa’s sense of humor and carefree attitude made her the heart of their family. Through these fundraisers, Rushana aims to keep Raeesa’s memory alive and honor the positive impact she had on everyone around her.
The Healing Power of Community
Organizing these events has not only helped others but also provided Rushana with a path to healing. The outpouring of support from her community has shown how much Raeesa was loved and missed. This communal effort makes her even prouder to call Raeesa her sister. Last year’s funds made a tangible difference at the Gelvan Park Frail Care Home, and she is excited to see the impact at the Algoa Frail Care Centre.
Heartfelt Gratitude from Gelvan Park Frail Care Home
Rushana recently received a touching note from the Board and residents of Gelvan Park Frail Care Home, expressing their sincere gratitude for her donation of R25,700 on July 8, 2023. The Home, which cares for 100 frail older persons from extremely disadvantaged communities, is one of the largest institutions in the Eastern Cape dedicated to frail care. The cost of providing this care is substantial, requiring professional nursing staff and specialized equipment.
What to Expect at ChariTEA
The ChariTEA event promises an afternoon of delightful experiences. With DJ Executive providing music, Composed Photography capturing moments, and Bradley Goldman as the MC, guests will be thoroughly entertained. Attendees can look forward to a variety of savory and sweet snacks, a beverage station, and exciting surprises, including fantastic lucky draw prizes.
