How To Assist Wings And Wishes

WINGS and Wishes are dedicated to saving the lives of critically and chronically ill children by transporting them to receive lifesaving specialist medical care – a goal you can assist with.

Their objective is to provide transport for children, who are deemed financially less fortunate, to receive life-saving and/or specialised medical treatment – anywhere in South Africa.

In addition, they provide compassionate and professional assistance to these children and their families, ensuring they have immediate access to the essential medical services which they need, and which are not available to them at a local level.

One of these children is Nelson Mandela Bay’s own Cassidy, she was born with rare liver disease and at 4 months old (in 2010) she travelled with Wings and Wishes from Gqeberha to Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town for an assessment.

This was the first of many trips and by 2016 she had clocked up 33 trips. By July of that year, she was placed on the liver transplant list. Her journey has been long and painful with multiple admissions to hospitals. Whilst waiting for a liver transplant Cassidy’s condition deteriorated.

In 2021 the family was informed that she was in liver failure and would not survive without a new liver. She was referred to Donald Gordon Hospital in Johannesburg for a living donor transplant evaluation. In late 2021 they received the news that Cassidy’s mom, Chantelle, was a perfect match for a liver transplant. In February 2022, she made her 42nd trip – this time to receive her new liver from her mother Chantelle. Cassidy celebrated her 13th birthday this year. (information from Wings and Wishes)
