Nelson Mandela Bay is making major strides toward energy sustainability with the long-awaited Fishwater Flats Biogas Project now underway. Once completed, this facility will convert wastewater sludge and organic waste into biogas, generating electricity to supplement the city’s power supply.
Powering Homes and Businesses
The project is rolling out in two phases. The first phase, currently in progress, is set for completion by the end of the year and will initially produce 600 megawatts of electricity. This phase serves as a testing ground while the Metro continues infrastructure installation. Upon completion of phase two, the facility is expected to generate 300 megawatts—enough to power just over 1,000 households.
While this won’t eliminate load shedding, it marks an important step in building a more stable energy grid for residents and businesses.
Reducing Waste and Supporting Sustainability
Nelson Mandela Bay currently produces 100 million litres of wastewater daily, and over 600,000 tons of waste are disposed of at Arlington and Koedoeskloof landfill sites each year. This biogas facility will help reduce landfill waste by repurposing sludge from the Fishwater Flats Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW), cutting down on environmental pollution.
A Step Toward Energy Independence
This initiative is part of the Municipality’s broader plan to integrate alternative energy sources into the local grid, reducing reliance on conventional electricity and lowering carbon emissions.
MMC for Electricity and Energy, Councillor Ziyanda Mnqokoyi, emphasized the importance of this project in the Metro’s long-term energy strategy:
“We have a responsibility to build a resilient energy future by investing in a diverse energy mix. This includes solar energy, energy-efficient infrastructure, and now the biogas approach.”
She added that project managers have assured the Metro that the facility will begin supplying electricity to the grid within the next two years.
What’s Next?
Residents can expect ongoing updates as the project progresses, with the Municipality monitoring its impact on energy supply and waste management. The Fishwater Flats Biogas Project is a step toward a more sustainable and energy-resilient future for Nelson Mandela Bay.
