How A Couple’s Love For Oil And Pottery Taking Gqeberha By Storm

Husband and wife team Bentley and Kayla Van Wyk have combined their individual passions and businesses to create a Gqeberha brand focusing on pottery and essential oils called Potter’s Hand and Co.

“Bentley started Potter’s Hand Ceramics in 2016 and I started my business in 2022 but we joined forces this year because we want to grow together and build together not solo. We have always collaborated and realized that it would be a waste to have two businesses so we joined both businesses and made it one entity,” said Kayla whose husband specializes in ceramics while she works with essential oils.

“We want to leave a legacy for our kids one day that will eventually evolve into whatever they go into when they are older,” she said.

Bentley studied Ceramic design at Nelson Mandela University, trained other artists and travelled the globe exhibiting his artworks.

“I never chose ceramics it chose me. But once I began working with clay I fell in love with it. Clay has taught me many things and I am constantly learning as I go along”, he says.

Kayla’s passion for essential oils started in adolescence growing with her.

“I am constantly educating myself and reading books to improve my knowledge with regard to essential oils,” she said.

Potter’s Hand and Co’s most popular products are personalized hand-thrown cups, personalized ornaments and spoon rests. On the essential oil side of things sinus oil rollers, kiddies oil rollers as well as hair growth oil are always in demand.

Inspired by their preschool-aged daughter, the duo have launched Christmas ornament kits for kids to do at home.

The couple who both work full-time outside of their business do everything at Potter’s Hand and Co themselves.

“Eventually be able to have a centre in the northern areas where we can uplift our young people and teach them a skill that can generate an income. We also want to educate more people on the powers and benefits of essential oils. I would love every home to have essential oils, I know that wishful thinking but I do believe that can happen,” they say.

Some of our items are available at Lavish Hair Salon in Sherwood. We also do some markets and we will be at the Aurora Carnival on the 2nd of December. We also stock a coffee shop in Johannesburg. You can also send us a WhatsApp to order customized items,” they say
