If you have not been to see High School Musical Jr. at the Savoy Theatre yet, what are you waiting for?
This brilliant show, brought to the stage by the Nicki Rayepen Academy of Performing Arts, will have you singing and dancing along to well-known songs from one of Disney’s most beloved musicals.
I took my daughter to watch on opening night and, when I say she was enthralled, it’s no exaggeration. From the singing to the dancing to the acting, this show is definitely one for the books and a must-see.
A Story We All Know and Love
Based on the internationally acclaimed Disney Channel phenomenon, High School Musical Jr. follows the journey of basketball star Troy Bolton and academically gifted Gabriella Montez, who discover a shared passion for singing and decide to audition for their school’s musical.
As they challenge expectations and step outside their comfort zones, they inspire their fellow classmates to embrace their individuality and pursue their dreams.
For Nicki Rayepen, founder and director of the academy, the production represents much more than just a musical.
“High School Musical Jr. is ultimately about believing in yourself,” says Rayepen. “It’s about finding the courage to explore your talents, even when people expect you to stay in a particular lane. That message is just as important today as it was when audiences first fell in love with these characters.”
A Young Cast That Will Surprise You
The production has brought together months of rehearsals, vocal coaching, choreography and teamwork, creating an environment where young performers can grow both artistically and personally.
“Every rehearsal has been filled with excitement, laughter and growth,” says Rayepen. “The passion these young performers bring to the stage is truly inspiring.”
I can say for myself, I was not expecting such a professional production from such a young cast, but I was pleasantly surprised and amazed by the talent we have right here in our city.
This show is a masterpiece of vibrant costumes and high energy from start to finish. From the opening number to the final curtain call, there is not a moment where you are not smiling in your seat, dancing and singing along, or laughing at the perfectly timed comedic lines.
A Show That Leaves You Smiling
“This production celebrates what makes each person unique,” says Rayepen. “That’s a message worth sharing with every audience.”
Rayepen says she wants audiences to leave the theatre smiling and, believe me, that’s exactly the experience we had, along with my daughter asking, “Can we please come watch it again?”
I think that says it all.
With a talented local cast, beloved songs and a timeless message, High School Musical Jr. is set to be one of Gqeberha’s standout family productions this winter.
