Two-year-old Luca needs a life-saving liver transplant, and her family is racing against time to make it happen. Here’s how you can help give her the fighting chance she deserves.
Luca is fighting the biggest battle of her life. Diagnosed at 14 months with Pretext IV Hepatoblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood liver cancer, she has already endured 11 cycles of chemotherapy in hopes of shrinking the tumor for surgical removal. However, doctors have determined that the tumor remains unresectable—leaving a liver transplant as Luca’s only chance for survival.
The transplant is an urgent necessity. Her parents are currently being evaluated as potential live donors to expedite the process and give Luca the best possible chance of receiving the life-saving procedure in time. However, the financial burden of this critical operation is overwhelming.
The total cost of Luca’s transplant—including pre-surgical assessments, the surgery itself, and post-operative care—amounts to approximately R1 700 000. Additionally, the donor surgery, including medical workup, liver harvesting, and postoperative recovery, requires a further R700 000. While the family has medical aid, it does not cover the full amount, leaving them to raise significant funds to proceed with the transplant.
The surgery is set to take place in Johannesburg, where Luca and her parents will need to remain for a period ranging from six weeks to six months. This will mean time away from home, work, and their support system—all while focusing on Luca’s recovery and well-being.
Luca is a vibrant, loving child who deserves the opportunity to live a full, happy, and cancer-free life. Her family is appealing to the public to join in their mission to save their little girl. Every donation, no matter the size, brings them closer to making this life-saving procedure a reality.
