In the heart of Missionvale, a community that has long faced socio-economic challenges, the Missionvale Care Centre (MCC) stands as a pillar of hope, compassion, and empowerment. Founded by the late Sister Ethel Normoyle, the Centre provides essential services while nurturing a thriving, resilient community.
One of the key initiatives keeping this vision alive is the Fig Tree Legacy Fund, a dedicated fund ensuring the sustainability and expansion of MCC’s community projects.
The Legacy of Sister Ethel and the Birth of the Fig Tree Fund
Sister Ethel’s vision was to create a sanctuary where education, health, and social support could uplift an entire community.
In her memory, the Fig Tree Legacy Fund was launched in 2024 with a goal to raise R30 million over five years. This fund ensures MCC’s programs not only survive but thrive, bringing hope and opportunity to those who need it most.
A Hub of Learning and Opportunity
The Normoyle Primary School, housed within MCC, provides quality education to over 200 children, offering them a safe space to learn, grow, and dream. Education remains a cornerstone of empowerment, made possible through the Fig Tree Fund.
MCC also runs Youth Development Programs, offering academic support, literacy initiatives, psychosocial assistance, and extracurricular activities that help shape confident, well-rounded young leaders.
Cultivating Community: Gardening and Skills Development
MCC empowers community members through:
- Vegetable gardening projects, teaching sustainable food production and nutrition
- Craft and creative workshops, offering income-generating opportunities, especially for women
- The Impumelelo Training Centre, providing practical skills for employment or entrepreneurship
These initiatives grow more than plants and crafts; they grow hope, confidence, and independence.
Health, Healing, and Holistic Care
MCC offers a comprehensive range of health and well-being services:
- General medical consultations
- Women’s health and family planning
- Physiotherapy and optometry
- Pharmacy services
- HIV/AIDS education, counselling, and support groups
- Nutrition and wellness assistance
- Community-based care workers providing home visits
Thanks to the Fig Tree Fund, these life-changing services remain accessible and sustainable.
A Community United by Compassion
At its heart, the Missionvale Care Centre and Fig Tree Fund are about collective upliftment. Every child educated, every skill taught, and every life supported contributes to a stronger, more resilient, and hopeful community.
The Fig Tree Fund is not just a financial initiative. It is a living tribute to Sister Ethel’s belief that together, lives can be transformed.
