Gqeberha’s Theodor Herzl High School can celebrate a huge achievement as Grade 11 learner Liyemah Funani clinched first place in the Regional round of the IIE Varsity College National High Schools’ Quiz (NHSQ).
Liyemah will now join the top eight finalists from across South Africa in the Grand Finale in Cape Town on Saturday, 13 September, where the national champion will be crowned.
Coming in just behind Liyemah were Chaez Cannon (Grade 11, Port Alfred High School) in second place, and Zeenat Cerfontein (Grade 11, Pearson High School) in third.
The NHSQ, now in its tenth year, tests Grade 11 learners’ general knowledge across Geography, Science and Nature, History, Sport, and Current Affairs. The competition is held digitally via the Kahoot app across all eight IIE Varsity College campuses.
Reflecting on her win, Liyemah said:
“This round was exciting and a true test. I wasn’t on the leaderboard until much later in the quiz. I’m looking forward to the Grand Finale, where I’ll have the chance to measure my general knowledge against the best minds in the country.”
The Grand Finale promises a thrilling showdown, with the national winner receiving R10 000, their school R50 000, and their teacher or coach R6 000. The runner-up and second runner-up will also walk away with cash prizes for themselves and their schools, making it a big win for both the learners and their schools.
The competition highlights the incredible talent coming out of Gqeberha and across South Africa, and the upcoming finale will see these young minds battle it out on a national stage.
